Creating your own maps for Garmin units

I have some very good paper topo maps (1:25000) of places in Europe where I will be riding this summer. I am planning to buy a Garmin (probably a Vista HCx) and I was wondering if anyone has experience scanning paper map, scaling and referencing them then uploading them to a Garmin unit

Some of the things I am looking for:

    - pointers to software to do the scaling / referencing / converting to garmin compatible maps files
    - performance issues with a Vista HCx type unit when using scanned / converted maps (for example what's the optimum file size, etc...)

    Thanks.

sounds like a very time intesive process. Search this forum for "moagu", it shows how to turn a digital map into a garmin map. Now, scanning and referencing your paper maps is where all the fun is.
