Another Etrex mounting question - Vista Hcx

After a thorough search on this forum I've still haven't figured out the best way to mount my Vista Hcx to my bike.

    - The Garmin mount apparently rattles pretty bad with this unit which doesn't make me feel very secure.
    - This http://www.mountguys.com/product_p/rap-274-ga16.htm looks great but my bars are 31.8 mm and if my math is correct that converts to 1 1/4" so I don't think it will fit. I also like the idea of having it on my stem - not bars.
    - I really liked the pic's I've seen where people have ziptied or velcroed the soft case to the stem. However I don't see how you would prevent the unit from flipping upside down (rotating on the stem) over bumpy terrain - gravity rules.

Anyone have any other ideas or see flaws in the above assessment?

the garmin mount does not 'rattle pretty bad'... any minor looseness can be taken up by a piece of strategically placed electrical tape

+1 on doesn't rattle bad, etc.

The bar mount is very flexible and will fit either bar size.

I've used the Garmin mount on both my earlier Vista Cx and now also with the HCx.

It does work, but is not a snug fit.

I always tie the lanyard around the bars or stem too.

As for the mount shown in the link, that's a Ram setup for mounting onto a tube. I ordered the Ram bicycle mount and should see it early next week. Cost was similar to the other unit shown.

    Ram mount size?

Yeah, we're going for a week in Fruita and Moab where the riding is bumpy to say the least. I need something that will keep it tight.
I like the looks of that Ram mount but nothing I've seen says that it will fit larger bars. Does anyone know if that is the case?

See this post 60 CSx Handlebar Mount?

It is for the 60CS but the concept is the same.

That's what I was looking for

Oooh, daddy like. That mod. looks to be exactly what I was after. I just ordered that Ram mount and will do something similar. Thanks for the idea and kudos for the ingenuity!
