    XTC 2 29er 2X10

Anyone know if there are any clearance issues with the XTC 29er and a 2X10 setup?

No issues as long as you don't run the narrow 156 Q Factor XX SRAM crank, I run my XTC carbon with XT 2x10 with no issues

Cool, what the hell size BB do we have, I cant find jack on any website that fits the 90 MM BB I have on mine, everything is 68-73. I measured it and its 90 so I take it its the BB90 24 mm spindle but like I said chain reaction and jenson have didly for it unless I am measuring it wrong.

OK just got the number off the BB says SM BB 71-41 so WTF? How do they measure the BB shell then, I took my callipers and it measures 90 MM across the bottom of the bike where the BB is housed, jesus they made the new BB to damn confusing lol.

It's the same as a 68 or 73mm BB. Those measurements are @ the bike frame without bearings or spacers.

I am getting it back next Friday from getting painted, the grey colour just wasn't going with my whole rebuild scheme. I plan on putting it back together the week after as I am waiting for some stickers to come in for the frame. I do have all my new parts in a box waiting to be freed. I will be posting pics through the build process, this is my first fully customized MTB. I am keeping my Original cranks and got two new chaingrings from Raceface for a 2x10 26 x36 setup and a hope bash guard.

On the BB issue it is a BB90 the 68-73 is the actual frame size with out bearings, the external bearings make it 90. Mine is pressfit so 90 is the actual width of the frame where the BB is pressed in. I ordered a raceface BB90 replacement which allows me to run Shimano Hollow Tech II or raceface Type X cranks. Even the guy at my LBS said he wish they would stop with making so many different BB, even TREK has there own Press fit system.

kool, cant wait to see how it comes together..
I guess the stock bb is quite heavy compared to the hollowtech?
    is yours a 2012 or 2011?
My 2012 just came into the shop yesterday and i had them hoist up on the scale and was shocked to see it was 26lbs with all the stock parts/pedals/reflectors/tags etc on it.
I'm 5'6" and have about 1.5 - 2 inchs of standover.. so its pretty much the perfect size for me.. I'm really liking this bike... I will stay tuned to your progress.. thank you

NO I had to replace the BB as I kinda wrecked one cup removing the BB with a socket, no LBS had a pressfit bearing remover and I had ordered that tool plus some other bearing press and what not from park but they haven't arrived and I need it apart for the painter . Those cups are plastic and the raceface one uses aluminium cups. Siting here with new parts and no bike is driving me insane, whats worse is the next 2 months are going be be no riding uggg I hate winter. The GF bike goes in for painting after xmas, she has a trek fuel and we are getting it painted pink for her. She bought it used and I have been rebuilding it slowly, its her first year riding as we just met before summer. Took her out on a friends bike and she has been hooked ever since. I got her on all the tuff stuff right away and she has progressed so far in a few short months with a few scars to prove it.

Mine is getting powder coated hers I am not sure. I might have to order some special colour powder from a place in the US and have someone spray and bake it for me. Another option is a guy at work paints cars and he said he would do it for me with just cost of materials, she is just getting the main triangle painted and its a 15" bike so the frame is pretty damn small. The rear triangle I stripped and polished all the parts and with the pink mainframe I think the contrast will look good. I know she is excited to get it done. LBS has a nice set of mavic wheels they built and are selling at a great price I might surprise her and buy them.

Sweet, I have the ZTR arch EX white with black DT spoke, red nipples, RED Hope Hubs and the red hope razor rotors, it looks off the hook.
I am getting the bike gloss white and going to have black GIANT stickers on the down tube and the Klingon High command symbol on the head tube. Yeah I am a treky plus it just looks frigin cool ass. Not many will know what the hell it is. I will post some picks of my parts if I can remember my photo bucket login LOL.

nice contrast on the wheels... I like them a lot..
quick question.. how much lighter is the wheel configuration compared to the stock sxc2 wheels?
and what tires will you be using? the stockers?

here is one of the bike when I just got the wheels built, it has the old rots on the hubs and all the other original parts. As a side note order yourself a new derailleur, the stock one sucks hard, ghost shifts alot and has a lot of chain slap, put an SLX or XT on it and it stops it.

Not sure on weight but these are allot lighter and it has an XT cassette now as well. For tires I run a specialized control on the front and a maxis cross mark on the back I didnt like the stock tires at all, I found them to be very loose. I corner very fast and I need my tire to hold and the schwables didn't do the job.

Well the cassette, chain, shifter and thats about it, the rear derailleur can be swapped for a 10x if your going to change it as I suggested earlier, the stock one sucks. The 9 and 10 speed cassettes fit on the same freewheels. I just bought new everything and went sram X9 on my derailleurs and shifters, I find they just shift way better then Shimano. Just ride what you got for a season and see how you like it. I love how the bike handles and thats why I spent the money to make it my total custom, I have been riding 20 years and this is the first time I have built one this way and I am having a blast doing it.

i agree about how the bike rides...i feel very comfortable on it and its so nimble... even more so im guessing with the stans wheels and x9 hubs im guessing.
just be removing the reflectors and swapping wheels i should be under 25lbs...
keep me posted and dont be shy with the pics..

no the forks are staying black unless I buy new ones but these work good. Having a little issue with the chain line though, in big ring 36 and big ring at back 36 the chain slips off the bottom cog on the rear derailleur, not sure why as the cranks are the same I just changed the rings. Its a med length derailleur but so was the old one I took off, not sure what the issue is at this point. The brake lines are to long and I have to watch a few vids on how to cut them on hopes website. The shifting is nice and smooth and bang on, I love sram shifting, just this chain line things is a thorn in my side. I might put the tape on my rims today and get them ready for tubeless, not sure though might try and solve the chain line thing. At any rate I still have 3 months before riding season even comes close to starting again so I have time to figure it out.

It was the chain, I took it back and got it replaced and all is fine now, must of been a manufacturing defect, slight twist in the chain. Happy camper now, I just watched vids on hopes website for these brakes OMG these things bleed just like a cars system and uses same fluid, these guys rock. Have vids on setting up your pads, followed there instructions no rubbing and every things is perfectly centered. These are strong to I should be able to stop now WOOT! The brakes I got were more suited for free ride DH then XC but at 210 lbs XC **** just wasn't stopping me. Nothing like zipping through a rock garden with basically no brakes, Elixers are not my favourite brakes, at least not the ones that came on the bike, I found them weak for my weight and riding style. Believe it or not this is were the whole bike mod started was replacing the brakes and it spread from there LOL.

Just measured them 695 mm 0 rise and looks like maybe 2 degree back sweep, they're pretty straight bars.
The bars I got sound like yours but mine are 700 wide Truvative carbon bars.
On a good note my raceface cranks on my other bike fit this one perfectly so I moved them over to the 29er.
I have one rotor out about a few thousands and its just enough to rub, got to get that little bend in it out.

LOL I see your wasting no time in buying toys, like I said in an earlier post replace that rear derailleur you'll be doing yourself a big favour.

Something like this would be good
Amazon.com: Shimano RD-M772 XT Shadow Rear Derailleur, GS: Sports & Outdoors
Not sure if its 9 or 10 speed is doesn't really say.
If your going to keep the triple chain rings make sure you get long cage and not med or short.
Opps I should of read more its a 9 speed LOL

I bought the raceface next carbon seatpost 30.9x400 I went 400 as I had the frame length to take it, your frame is smaller so make sure it dosent go down to where the water bottle cage bolts are located.
As for the clamp its the 34.9 Just measured the seatpost tube with my digital callipers and it was 34.8 35.08 so yes 34.9. Pedals I have no idea its the std thread I have the XTR clipless pedals. Hope this helps.

Well shortened all the brake cables today, steel braided sure looks nice but what a nightmare to shorten the tubing. Lines are all bled and ready to rock. Got both tires running tubeless now, was my first time doing that as well. Watched a few vids on youtube but I had a hard time with the stans tape, so I went and got a 1" roll of gorilla tape and it worked the first try. If I ever do more rims I will def use gorilla tape over stans tape, plus a roll of gorilla is only 3 bucks. It's just easier to work with, conforms to the rim better, stickier and for me just plain easy to do, some call it the ghetto tubeless but it worked better for me then stans tape. Got to tweak the chain length and then double check all bolts and its all done.

Yes I bought as close as I could to the stem it came with as I liked the handling of the bike. I bought a 90 mm by 10 degrees and yes it's the common 1 1/8 the stock is 90 mm by 6 degrees. Did you get any new parts yet? If so post some pics of the upgrades.

Nice, looks like your well on your way with that parts list, all those parts fit the bill nicely. I kept the stock seat as I find it very comfy. I tried my wtb that came on my Norco and I hate it. It's a wtb silveraudo, prolly not the best saddle but its very uncomfortable. I want a new saddle but still debating on what one, its not an easy choice.

i picked that saddle because its small compared to the 280mm ones

I also knew it was probably the most comfortable seat i would find and only 260gm..

for $70 its worth a shot i figure.

    Some details....

    90mm stem, syntace, specialized flat bar...wide, I think it's 700mm.
Silicon grips, the brain Reba fork is cool...not my fav but light.
    Setup as a SS, 32X21.
Shimano tharis post, and shinamo saddle.
CRT crank and bb...booths on without issue.

x0 brakes....cross max wheelset, with tubeless ikon tires.

19.4lbs with 520 pedals....that means 18 and change without pedals! Sweet.

Very Nice but at 19 lbs I would be afraid I would break it. Even with all my changes I think i gained a pound on my bike LOL was 28 now 29. I know my wheels are lighter but breaks are heavier. I am 210 lbs I want stuff to last and stop me so I got more AM brakes then XC. My cranks are off my other bike and are heavier then the Shimano's I took off, over the summer I plan on getting some raceface turbine cranks for it. Nice bike though looks sweet an I bet it just flys.

the XTC is bb91. This is shimano pressfit for mountain bikes (bb86 for road). bb90 is the trek standard i believe. The giant website use to say bb71 which i believe is the same as bb91 but cheapish in quality. Anyway the above video is pretty good.

Small update, cranks where onsale so pulled the trigger and also some other non functional parts but yet add the BLING factor LOL, I said this time I am going all out, building exactly what I want bling add all. The last bunch of stuff I am getting is at the end of February and will just be more zing bling for my brakes.
Taking the GF bike in today finally to get powder coated, she still hasn't decided wether she wants pink or lime green. I am for the green as her riding gear and helmet are pink already, I said don't overkill the pink. I told her they have metalic as well now she is thinking about that too, why did I open my mouth LOL. Once I get it back, most likely end of next week I will post some pics of her build up as well.

Ok I think I am getting the Manitou Tower PRO Forks next month and then I am done LOL, I really don't like these ones and since I am blowing the budget anyways might as well go for it all lol. Been doing alot of reading on forks and for the money the Manitous perform really well and are very self dialable. Going for 120 mil travel this time,I think 100 is to short for my wieght and riding style.

very nice man! how hard is it to swap out the crank and bb?
i noticed on this stock one it has like an inch of play and it just seems kinda clunky..

Well its a press fit system so you need some special tools to remove and replace the BB. If you don't want to invest in the tools just take it to your LBS. The cranks are easy they just slide out once the bolts are removed. The stock BB is pretty cheap I have to say, I put in a raceface BB92 pressfit in mine with raceface turbine cranks.

Yep raceface spindles use the same OD size as shimano, 24mm. Just make sure to measure your BB shell which I think is 89.5 or something close to that. Follow the instructions as to what spacers to use. I think I just used the one on the drive side, I would have to look tonight when I get home to be sure.Should be the same as whats in there so just have a look when you remove the old one what spacers where on what side. The Raceface BB is alot nicer then the Shimano plastic POS.

and any thoughts on the Shimano XTR M970 bb? i presume that would also fit and work with my stock until i get a new raceface or xtr crank? or would it be the xtr m980 model?

I run the 11-36 so I dont have to use granny as much to climb in my area, no mountains here but the hills that we do have are short and steep. I run a 32 up front and a 11-36 at the back and never use granny anymore to climb but my FS has a 36 up front and a 11-34 out back and I have to use granny gear to climb as its just geared to low. Gear it for what you ride, I think they come with 11-36 iirc.

You're going to notice a huge weight saving on the XT cassette over the stock one. I prefer sram chains over shimano, they use a master link as where the shimano you need a chain tool. Just my preference.

I went with the xt chain since i got the xt cassette and intend to get the xt crank maybe in a few weeks. found it for 199$ so the entire drivetrain will be XT.
You have been a huge help from the beginning Fahz! Thank You!

Glad to help, the next big upgrade is dump the fork , it's very heavy. Get the Manitou tower pro I have it and love it plus its half the weight of the stock one. I got my bike down to 26.5 lbs . The XT stuff is very nice, you should see nice shifting performance now. Good parts make a ton of difference, I think some stuff is overkill like XTR nice stuff but very costly and for a guy my size I like things to last when I crash and not break off, some ultra light stuff breaks easy. Now having said that I do have XTR pedals and they are tough and reallllllly nice My riding buddy had XO sram and he had a small wipeout basically fell over on a hill climb and his brake lever snapped off. Bike was 2 weeks old, he was not a happy camper.

this is really about the only reasonable black shock I can ever find for my bike.
Amazon.com: RockShox Reba RLT Solo Air 100 - mm, (Maxle Lite 15, Tapered Steerer, (29 - Inch), PushLoc Remote Right, Black): Sports & Outdoors

its 2lbs lighter than the stock shock.

hey fahza, i have a question i was hoping you could answer.
i got the m770 cassette, xt chain and the raceface bb92 bb.
Now I'm going to order the m770 crank and am wondering is there any disadvantage to me getting the 175mm (my stock is 170mm) other than the pedals will be a little closer to the ground?

Some say it matters but 5mm is the thickness of a bottom bracket spacer, don't think it really matters. The usual advice is longer crank for bigger rider/bike size.

so I guess im confused .. would the 175mm mean longer crank arms or no?the 175mm is about 60$ cheaper than the 170mm for some odd reason ??

Not sure why you're confused, 175 crank is 5mm longer than your stock. Don't think you'll notice 5mm difference and if its cheaper go for it!

thanks, i was confused by you saying it was the spacer... to me that meant it had nothing to do with the crank arm length.. so thank you for clarifying that indeed the crank arms are longer.

it should be a significant improvement I'm hoping.

Yes you will notice a big difference in shifting and braking will be hands down better then the exlir 1's. I broke my XTC frame, I think I am getting an AthemX or a Trance and moving my parts over from the XTC. My other 29er is a full squish and after riding it more waiting for my new frame I grew to like it more and more.

how'd you break it? bad wipe out?
yes,the brakes will appreciated for sure. i got front and back with 2 icetech rotros for $288.32 shipped. I feel like i got a pretty good deal..
I also found out i can easily mod these xt shifters and get full xtr capabilities..How to upgrade your XT shifter to XTR functionality (Multi Release) in 3 min. - YouTube

so will xtc frame be replaced under warranty? or do they let you upgrade and use that frame quote towards a more expensive frame like the anthem?

No since I painted it the warranty was void, they did offer me crash replacement so it was only 250 for a new frame. It broke where the seatpost is welded to the top tube, the 2014 look like they have beefed that area up, must been a problem area. I am not painting this frame , lesson learned LOL. Looking at a new bike for 2014 just not sure what I want, Giant TranceX or a Rocky Mountian Altitude or element and a Norco Fluid 7 and a Norco Bigfoot fat tire bike, comes out in 2 months 1500 bucks, way cheaper than those over priced Salsa's
Still trying to decide if I want to stay 29 or try a 27.5, the jury is still out. Giant USA has the 2014 models out but we won't see them in Canada till the spring which really sucks.
I may pickup a 2013 though as I am not really sold on the 2014 colour schemes on the Giants. I really wish the frame sets were cheaper, 1500-1800 or 1900 for a whole bike on the lower end specs but still. I am still looking into the Airborne Hobgoblin as my next FS 29er.

cant you just get a cheap frame on ebay? i see quite a few giant frames..
I bet the baking process during the powder coating is what fubared your frame...
its amazing how thin this alumx or whatever material is...
so anyway.. got my XT shifters today.. i did the mod and now have xtr shifters in an XT shell.
my XT brakes and icetech rotors arrive tuesday i guess.. I dont have the tools to do the bottom bracket so im going to let a shop do all the installs..
I'm regretting not having the common sense to do the 2x10 upgrade... I guess i would of needed to start that transformation back when i had the derailers swapped?
is there anything i can do to easily convert to 2x9?

Yes thats how I did it on my KHS full squishy, just set the FD so it cant move past the bash guard and 2x9 is done. The only thing I did on the giant different was get a FD that only did 2X and my front shifter only does 2X, I was getting new ones anyway so decided just to do that. The crank is a std 3 ring with just 2 rings and bash, I love the bash, going over big down trees is easier now. I used to rely on pedalling over the long with the chainring but now I gust glide over it, the rear tire hits the obstacle and I then pedal over it. I find it works better at higher speeds, my sob has a third ring and I can hear him hit and sometime groan/grunt as the bike stops as he tries to power over it, since having the bash guard those issues are gone for me. I have a RaceFace and a Hope bash guard, straight line makes good stuff to plus they are Canadian like RaceFace.

what about compatibility of third party rings being matched with an XT drivetrain and derailers? will it effect shifting if i get custom rings?
i was thinking the shimano 36t ring isnt gonna cut it.. I would like to stick as close to the current ratios..and hit as close to the sweet spot as i can from dropping a ring..
I was thinking maybe a 38 or 40t on the middle and 26 or 28 on the inner small ring?
is that gonna be an issue with frame rub or with shifting if i have a 40t ring and say a 26 or 28t small ring?
I'm looking at the Race Face Turbine rings or maybe the blackspire rings..

thoughts and feedback would be sweet..
really appreciate it.. wishing I would of thought about it before ordering the cassette and crank... technically i can just return the parts for exchange i suppose but I figure if i can do it withought needing to by anything but new rings and a bashguard why not.. then i can always go back to stock ..

well with a 38 you might rub the frame with a std 3 ring cranks, a true 2 ring crank has a different offset, the bing ring is further out so no issue hitting the frame. On mine way back at the beginning of this thread I had a 36 on it and I had 3 mm to spare, I don't think a 38 or bigger will clear the frame. I don't know what kind of trails you ride but to big up front and you will not have the power to climb hills and will have to drop to your granny a lot, I have a std 32 on my Giant and a 36 on the KHS. On the same trails I can climb everything in the 32 and never drop to granny but if on the KHS with the 36 even though its only 4 more teeth it makes a hell of a difference and on some small steep hills I have to drop to granny, it's not for a lack of trying. My legs have gotten stronger with this gearing but some hills it's just not possible to power your way up, use up to much energy , spin out or it's just to ****ing hard to pedal.

As far as rings go if they are not designed for single speed then anyone should work as long as the bolt spacing is correct. but triple ring and double ring are different by a lot so there is no mistaking them.IIRC it's called the BCD 104/64 should be what you have and the bigger ones for 2x10 are 120/80 but not all. Your shimano should be 104/64 and any ring will work designed for that BCD.

I use Raceface Turbine rings with my shimano cassette and it all works fine together, just make sure you get 9 or 10 speed to match your cassette.

good info. thank you! couple more questions .. if i get a 36t 104bcd ring should i get a 36t bashguard or do i go with say a larger size like a 40t ?
also.. arent the blackspire rings supposed to be 9/10 compatibility?
    I'm considering
Blackspire Super Pro chainring, 64BCD - 26T black
    and
Blackspire Super Pro chainring, 104BCD - 36T black
