Great bike, ugliest saddle design I've seen. Did Giant hire a 3rd grader to draw the designs? I'd still buy the Trance 29x though.

Sold my Anthem X4 29er to get a Trance X 29er. Quick question for those that own them. Those of you that have all your cables running internally...did your LBS bleed and route the rear brake for free, or did you take on the task yourself?

FWIW - My bike came with everything routed internally by the LBS.

And, yes, the seat is the only thing I don't like about this bike. Not only is it hard in all the wrong places (you know what I mean ...), but after only two weeks, the color is rubbing off. I'm looking at a WTB Deep-V.

One thing giants always been poor at was making a saddle IMO. Its the very first thing I replace! WTB FTW

WTB Silverado for me. Unfortunately our shop charges to internally route the rear brake. Personally, I think it's BS. Anyone spending $2k - $4300 should get the cables run the way they should've been from the manufacturer.

Called the LBS to see when the box would arrive and find out they had just finished building it!
28 lbs 15 oz. stock with my Time pedals. Hate the bar! Already swapped it. Will prob remove the dropper for a carbon post I have. Gonna enjoy dialing it in. Can tell I will LOVE the XT brakes. The saddle is a freakin joke. swapped for WTB Pure. I think I can get it to 27ish with my endurance wheels (Arch EX with Ikon/RR tubeless), carbon post. Use the dropper and Nobby Nics for my Northern travels. Crappy cell pics for now.

I was/am not that impressed with Fox's suspension and shocks. Odd coming from someone who has ridden all Fox their whole life. It always feels like there is too much sag. Getting replacement parts is like pulling teeth. If I were given a X0 or X1, I would swap all Fox out for Rock Shox instead.

I prefer the Shimano brakes over Avid too.

Just posted in the intro thread, cross posting pics here.
Grips changed to lizard skin chargers but with the locks changed to the ODI anodised blue.
Jet black anodised blue seat clamp - I broke the bolt on the giant one due to over tightening. This gave me an excuse to get a torque wrench
    XT 785 trail pedals.

Looking good fellas. I have a question. I realize the seat post is at a weird angle. My question is have you guys had a hard time getting the right position for your saddles?

When I got the bike, the shop had the saddle slid all the way forward. After riding a bit, I realized I could go back a bit more and I think it feels great. I'm kind of confused; everyone keeps talking about the crazy slack angle on this thing and it's 73...which I thought was basically an industry standard for xc bikes. It doesn't feel slack to me at all and I don't feel biased toward the back of the bike. I have no trouble climbing or the front end lifting on the climbs. Of course you can see in my pic that all the spacers have been removed from under the stem and the stem has been inverted. Not sure how it would have handled/felt set the way it was from the factory?

Thanks petey. maybe the style of the frame makes it look a bit more slack than it really is? I'm testing one out this weekend. Can't wait !!!!!!!

Yeah, I think it's kind of an optical illusion because of the bend the seat tube takes.

    Petey,

What pedals do you have? I have some clipless XT's on mine right now but am looking for some nice flats to change out to when I don't feel like clipping in.

I also learned that the hard way. On September 29 I was riding at my local trail and the LBS guys had a hospitality tent set-up. They asked me how I liked the new X1. I told them "it inspires confidence, and sometimes that's dangerous." Twenty minutes later I was lying on the trail with a broken collarbone. I was going down a steep drop and went over the bars. It happened so fast I don't remember why, just BAM, there I was.

I'm healing pretty good now. I rode some flat trails last Saturday.

    Have fun. Be safe.

Not sure, went off a decent jump and was just a bit crooked on landing.. the front tire pealed off the rim and I ate crap. Have two broken ribs. I've never seen this before. I wasn't that bad out of line off the jump. I really don't know. What I do know is now I can't ride for a couple weeks.. bummer.

I'm really not sure. When I was able to get up, and look at the bike, the tire was pealed off the rim but the tube had not blown yet. The tube was a giant bubble sticking out. It poped a couple minutes later. Never seen anything like it. In fact I've never heard of someone pealing the tire off the rim....

In case anyone is interested in a downtube protector, I ran across this affordable, and seemingly doable option for his bike. I'm going to be buying an X1 in the next month and I've been researching d/t protectors because of the rocky terrain I ride in. This looks like it might fit the bill. Could even use the Giant bosses for mounting.

Amazon.com: Zefal Down Tube Armor Frame Guard - MTB, Transparent: Sports & Outdoors

Edit: I don't believe this would work given the radius near the bottom of the downtube of the TX29. This is more for a straight downtube.

My Trance X1 29er Size medium

I am 5 8" and feel the Medium is a bit big for me, I found the small was way too small though. I have a 70mm stem coming so that will hopefully sort the size issue out. I am also thinking of chopping the bars by 20 -30mm, the 720mm bar is a bit too wide for what I am used to.

You will see I have a couple upgrades there, I plan this bike to be a trail/do it all bike as I already have a Santa Cruz Tallboy as a XC bike.

Same-sized mate just bought a medium AX29. He tried the med TX29 and found it too big, esp on the tight and tech tracks at Signal Hill. He likes his AX29 but I still think he'd be better off on a small, or with a 50mm stem on the med, as he like chucking his bikes around.

I had a Medium AX29er but found it too big and replaced it with the Tallboy which is a much better fit.

You will see I have a couple upgrades there, I plan this bike to be a trail/do it all bike as I already have a Santa Cruz Tallboy as a XC bike.
Great spec! XX/XX1. Is this your first foray into 1 X 11? Like to see your thoughts when you've put some miles on this drivetrain.

    My X1

Just picked it up today and haven't had time to do really anything save for a few things:

    - Swap out the dropper post and saddle for and Easton EA70 and a WTB Pure V. 338g net weight savings.
    - C/S protector
    - H2O bottle cage
    - Shimano clipless pedals

29.2 lbs as it sits (large). Tubeless should get it under 29#.

Busted the chain about 4 miles in but it was still a great day. What a great bike!

Sorry, I guess I missed this question. The pedals are Gussett Slim Jim's. I am probably going to get some DMR Vaults at some point - I want to add some more color to this rig, but that's for another post.

Only problem with the Vaults is that color has been discontinued and I've only been able to find them on European sites. I really, really like them, but was afraid I'd have trouble matching up the purple/magenta with other components. Someone on the women's board pointed me toward Deity. Less expensive and they have a lot of purple anodized stuff!

First ride today on my Trance X 1

Fun bike. Coming from years and years of hardtails, rigid singlespeeds and the like. Wanted a great bike for long rides on rougher trails, and for when I travel to ride to places like Dupont/Pisgah or Moab.

Making a few mods: RaceFace Turbine's, Carbon higher rise bar, shorted stem, Fizik seat, and better wheels from my hardtail, ArchEX's with Hope Pro EVO2s', might drop the dropper too, not sure if I will really use it. Thinking my mods will drop a few lbs, maybe even get me into the upper 27's with alittle luck(bike weight just over 30lb at the shop).

First ride was great. No issues with the chain as others have reported, shifting was good too. I used the FOX app to setup the suspension. In practice it seems the rear setup was too soft, and the front maybe too firm. I'm sure it will take a while to get it right.

Scott, I don't know about the X1 but the XO has the CTD switch on the fork and shock. Play with that and see if that makes it better for you. As for the dropper seat post, I didn't know if I was going to keep it at first either but after the first downhill run with dropping the seat down made me realize how much I need it. Now I got a dropper post for my Trance X1 26er.

    Tony,

The X1 does have CTD on the front and rear shocks. I played with on the rear, an the C setting did help firm it up on the smoother sections. I was going through all of the travel on the rear, and the trail I was on is not that rough. I'm guessing I need to add some air, and or up the damping a bit.

Nice bike, fun change from my 3" travel 29 hardtail!

FYI- Ensure that your initial set-up is done with both front and rear in the wide open D modes.

    Don,

Yes, we did the initial setup with both shocks set to D mode. I think the setup is close, and I don't have much experience with full suspension riding, so the setup might be right, but the rear suspension seems too active, it even feels like its squating down under harder efforts on steeper inclines uphill. The front of the bike didn't feel active enough. On a normal Cross country ride I went through full travel on the rear suspension twice, which I also thought was a tell tale of the pressure being too low?

My front suspension took about 6 or 7 rides to break in. It started to bottom on the same trails and at the same pressure so I had to add more air to compensate. Though we have different rear shocks I initially set sag at 30% and pretty much got the same squatting you describe - but without bottoming. I've since then tuned the shock on the firmer side 270 psi and gradually let air out in 5 psi increments until it felt "right" to me. I ended up at 240 psi (40 psi below recommended pressure for my riding weight) and about 26% sag. What I realized was there was a lot of wiggle room with psi for any given % of fixed sag.

In the end sometimes you just have to feel through these things -which includes getting the bike to feel how you don't want it to - so when it does feel right you will know it right away.

Nice! Can you get some pictures from further away so we can see how it looks? I think you said you have the X2, right? Is the color on those yellow, or green? It looked so different depending on what site I've been on, it was hard to tell. Either way, blue should look good with it!

Man giant can come up with some horrendous color schemes! I'm kind of glad I can't afford one of these till next year as I would go with the x1 spec (mainly for suspension)and I HATE red...

Hopefully next years x1 will look a letter better!

I LOVE my trance x 26" though! Gonna be sad to see her go but cant wait for the tx29!
There's something about those long grueling climbs that gets my front end all stiff... And I'm not talking about lockout...

Here is my Baby. I got her in Sept of 2012 and have put over 1200 miles on her so far in the past 6 months . I am lucky and live in northern California where I can ride all year. I do mostly Auburn, Annedale, and Tahoe in the summertime. This bike has been amazing for me. I changed the wheels to Mavic Crossmaxs, brakeset to XT's and added a flat ritchey handlebar 720mm.
I have found for me that the bike performs best with more air pressure in the shock. It is a 5 inch travel 29er and I think it is a bit overkill so I would rather loose out on a bit of the travel and get my shock a bit stiffer for climbing. It still seem to roll over small and large bumps with ease and I am not even close to bottoming out the shock. I have not noticed any bit of discomfort.
The headtube is a bit high so I emlinated all the spacers and am running it with none. This eems to lesten the wandering of the front end when climbing and so far has not been an issue when goin downhill.
This bike has made me faster over all types pf terrain and it is just plan fun to ride. I highly recommend it! Check out the Pics!
