Trance 27.5 - Broken Hanger, Mangled Derailleur

Bunny hopped off a curb today and was greeted with a horrible grinding, banging, awful sound. The rear derailleur hanger had snapped and inertia threw the assembly into the spokes...nearly went OTB just trying to stop before causing more damage!!

    So...couple questions...

    1. Now seems like a good time to convert from the 135x5mm QR to the 12x142mm axle as found on the SX and higher trim bikes. How do I get those dropout parts from Giant?

    2. Obviously I need a new rear derailleur and hanger (perhaps a stronger hanger?). Any suggestions on rear derailleurs?

    Obligatory pictures attached.
    As always, TIA!
    Cheerz!

The dropouts are the hanger, to upgrade you will need to order 142X12 dropouts from your LBS part number: 1280gs834609b1

The 142X12 DT Swiss Giant QR axle is part number: 1529gdtrws402

Crucially, you will also need a new hub to fit the wider axle through.

Wow, I was sooooo not expecting actual part numbers!! Thanks for that!!

I'm running Hope Pro II already, just have to swap the end caps.

I'm looking at replacing the derailleur with a Shimano SLX M675...thoughts? I don't really want to shell out money for a higher end derailleur; especially seeing as I'll prolly just break it too...

If your worried about the cost then you could also look at the Deore shadow+ derailleur RD-M615 as well.

Good choice, XT will only be no better, just lighter.

If you want an upgrade, better to get the XT shifter, slightly better shifting, smaller, lighter. Best of all, it can upshift two gears with one pull. Also, you are unlikely to break it!

Say...that looks exactly the one I just munged. Price-wise it looks the same as the 675 from Jenson (it's on sale right now...maybe I should get two!)

I am afraid these service parts numbers. They are not meant to be sold, actually. These two items are also available as aftersales parts. I will try to find their numbers when I get to the office tomorrow.

    Oh sure it did...

This is the third one I've broken...

Did I mention I have trouble recognizing my limitations as they flash past me?

    Oh. Carry on then!
I might do the same conversion too. Hunting down a converter for my hope rear hub.

Very true I suppose...the other two broke due to impacts, as evidenced by the heavily customized chainstays (first pic). Admittedly, I'm thoroughly impressed with the amount of beating this bike has withstood.

This last one was a bit of a baffler though. It was nothing more than a "sideways" bunny hop off the sidewalk...standard size curb height. Only thing I can imagine is a bit of wheel-flex and the inertia momentum of the derailleur caused a brief, but catastrophic, interfacing of the cage or derailleur body and spokes. I wonder if the doing the same kind of "hip" on dirt would have allowed enough tire slippage to prevent the wheel-flex...but the added traction of pavement was too much.
