    Shifter / dérailleur compatibility

I'm somewhat new to any major changes to my bike - I usually ride them, sell them and buy new. But the more I get into it, the more I want to change up the parts - like a new rear derailleur (2010 Giant Reign 2).

Shifters are SRAM, rear derailleur is a SRAM X7, but I prefer Shimano overall.

Could I replace the X7 rear derailleur with a Shimano XT? It already has an SLX front derailleur, so I'm assuming it'll work?

Nope. Sram and shimano don't mix for rear. Different pull ratios. The front, however, will mix since fronts are always the same pull ratio.

If you want shimano you will need to replace the rear shifter and derailleur.
There's something about those long grueling climbs that gets my front end all stiff... And I'm not talking about lockout...

While were on the same topic - what length is the OEM rear derailleur? Long, short, medium?
