Some people say you can run a standard shock off the self. However, the NRS really requires a shock with an adjustable negative chamber. Most shocks now-a-days come with auto adjusting negative chambers (depending on the psi in the positive chamber). As well as this a lot of shocks come with some form of pro-pedal, the NRS requires a set amount PSI in the negative chamber so there auto adjust shocks r no good in reality.

If you are going for an off the shelf shock go for a standard shock with the lowest pro-pedal settings you can find. Recommended shocks are the cane creek cloud 9 shock, fox float AVA and the 5th Element Air as well as the GIANT OEM NRS shock. (I'm sure there are more).
