I know the paint quality is rather lacking on the NRS...but I just upgraded my NRS3 to disk brakes and all of the paint around holes where the rear caliper screws in chipped off the second I began to tighten the bolts! Is the paint job really that poor? ...seems like the paint chips at the slightest touch.

I guess, though paint isn't really important to me... Dirt and scratches give a bike it's 'personality.'
But yeah, I agree. On my NRS 3, after my first ride I got chain suck. After the chain got sucked up only a few times, the entire area behind the chainring was devoid of paint...
Yo, what color is your NRS 3? I fortunately have a black colored one so i am able to use a black permanent marker to cover up the chips and scratches. My wife was able to find a nail polish close to the color of her jamis dakar sport, its an anodized red color. touching up is very easy and hardly noticable. You should go to the nearest supermarket and look for a nail polish close to the color of your bike and apply it.
actually the claim is that the paint is covered in a "diamond coat" supposedly the same clear coat that BMW used on their cars, who knows? I too have found that the paint does chip/scratch easily, but I've never had a bike that didn't. Luckily it is not Chromoly or steel, so we don't have to worry as much about corrosion. btw- I purposely removed the paint on my disc tabs w/ a dremel so the disc caliper would line up better, similar to facing a heattube or bb, same w/ the tabs on my fox fork (which also scratches easy!).
Now if there are dents in the tubing I would start to worry, but a few chips and scratches are unavoidable, unless your not really "mountain" biking.

I have an 04 NRS1 and the paint sucks. It's chipped in places where you wouldn't expect to see chipped paint. Granted it's mountain bike but I spent twice as much on this bike then my Trek 8000 and that paint job is solid. I guess they have to cut corners somewhere to keep the price reasonable and I would rather it be the paint job instead of the frame or something mechanical.
After my mom used hers for a few weeks all the paint was rubbed off where the cable rubs on the head tube. but it is normal for paint to chip in disk mounts.
