First post here. Great forum. Good to see other Giant owners. I love my VT. By the way, I am a mountain bike newbie. So..., be kind.
Need some help. I have a Medium size (18.5") 2004 VT3. I am thinking of purchasing an OEM Manitou Minute1 Fork and putting it on my VT3 to replace the Manitou Black that is currently on my bike. The fork that I am thinking about purchasing has been removed from a 2004 VT1 (fork has never been ridden). I do not know the size of the VT1 that this fork is coming off of. The steerer has been cut to 7 7/8". My question is, will this fork fit on my bike? Is the length of the steerer going to be a problem (too short) or is it the same size as the steerer on the Black that I am using right now?
I would highly reccomend that you check out the competition as well, such as the Fox. There have been many documented issues with the Minute forks. I have a VT 1 and I bought the Minute 1 fork. The ride was terrific while the fork worked, but after several months, the fork failed, and the bad part was that the support from Manitou was terrible. Eventually, my LBS stepped up and replaced the fork with a Minute 2, which has performed fine so far.
Thanks Spongedog - I will look into Fox. Funning think is my friend has had problems with his brand new Fox Fork. But, I know Fox are usually good.
To measure the steerer tube, where do you measure from? Do I measure from the top of the crown (?) of the fork, where it meets the head tube? Or do I measure from the bottom/underneath portion of the fork, then move on up past the crown(?) and on up the steerer tube. The fork that is currently on my bike looks to have about 7 & 7/8" steerer tube, but that is measuring from the bottom of the head tube. Still trying to figue out if this OEM Minute1 is the right size for my bike. Thanks!
Stuff breaks all the time, but the true test of the product is how the manufacturer stands behind it. This is one of the reasons I have a VT1 as a replacement for my NRS1, which suffered some frame damage. Giant stepped up and not only offered to replaced the frame with a new NRS, but also offered to change for a sturdier VT. They were great to deal with on the issue. Manitou took weeks to respond, did not follow through on promises, and then eventually forgot about me.

Thanks Spongedog, Jwiffle & Bar. I now know the fork will work with my VT. Thanks for the answers and the input. I am still undedided about going with Manitou or Fox. Product Support vs. Money Upfront - it is a scale that I am trying to weigh. Anyway, thanks again! I'll let you know what I do.
- murphie out!
