I have a 2010 Reign 2 (small) and I'm having some issues on pedal acceleration. Let me describe my problem and maybe someone can chime in.
So I've been riding this bike for about a good 6 months. This is my first full suspension. My previous bike was a 2008 Specialized Rockhopper. I feel that each pedal stroke uphill doesn't accelerate and I feel like I'm dragging.
Today I switched bikes with my buddy who has a 2009 Trance X3 (small). His Trance X felt like every pedal stroke would shoot me forward but when I'm climbing that same hill on my Reign, it felt sluggish. I rode his on the second loop.
I understand the difference between the bike. The Trance X is a Trail oriented bike with a steeper HA and my Reign is an All mountain with a slacker HA. Weight is about a pound difference.
Beside that, I love this bike!
Could it be the tire size ( 2.1 vs 2.35 )? Would 1 degree slacker HA make that much of a difference?
What can I do to make my bike accelerate faster when pedaling?
Yes I agree that one degree on the head angle shouldn't make that much difference.
In regards to tires I don't think it would be the actual size more the tread pattern, some tires do roll faster than others, and I guess the overall weight of the tires / wheels could make some difference.
Ppart from that I'd say the guys above are on the money with checking out your suspension set up first.
I would check the shock and take it to your lbs and see if the sag is correct with Pro pedal off. The should really be no pedal bob or lack of "pedal acceleration" as you put it on flat ground. When you swith to pro pedal on it should make it just stiff enough to reduce most bob on uphill climbs. Don't expect it to climb like the trance, trade off is you get to enjoy the coming down part a little more. Side note, with the RP Fox shock, fill chamber with your body weight plus ten pounds first to see where sag is. I change suspension around all the time. People often think that they don't have to mess with shock or fork. I checked my front fork, and had 20 extra pounds of pressure in it, due to the cold may here, and then a sudden warm up. I suggest checking suspension psi at least once a month, and also keeping a log about it!
I have my Reign setup with 25% sag. This should be fine right? I'll try 20% sag and see how that feels. With 25% sag, I was observing my friend ride up hill on my bike and I didn't see any pedal bob with pro pedal off.
I weight about 142 and last I checked my psi (about 2 months ago) was set at 170psi. The shock I have is the Fox Float RP2 XV with boost value. I'm assuming the extra volume is why my psi is roughly 30lbs above my weight.
The suspects are the tires and the suspension setup, maybe the tires are low on air or have a thread pattern that is too grippy and slows you down or your rear shock setup is not optimal for the type of riding you do.
+1 on suspension setup, and it might be counterintuitive, less sag doesn't always make it climb better - if the shock is too stiff, the suspension can hang up over bumps - try as much as 30% sag and see how it rides.
