    Giant Trance X Build

    Hi,

I have rashly ordered a frame online in a mid life crisis sort of way.

I am just wondering about (budget) build options for wheels and forks especially. Bike will be used for xc/trail riding, I way 12 stone/circa 85kg and most of the air I get comes from my guts.

    Fork:

I was hoping to add a 15mm fork, which seem to be available in Reba/Revelation/Sektor models in a zillion configurations on Merlin. What would best suit my style?

I like Reba's which I have on my hard tail, but was wondering if I should go for something with more travel (150mm Sektor/Revelation). Can anyone tell me the difference between RL and RLT? Also all the models available tend to be 1 1/8 steerer sizes - is a 1.5 steerer a vast improvement? I was thinking of going for an air model.

    Wheelset:

I have an old, slightly knackered set of QR 317 Mavics with cheapo hubs. I can either use these or a set of Mavic Crossrides (currently on hard tail), but only if I go for a QR fork. I often use 2.25 Maxxis Ardents and am currently trying 2.35 high roller on the front for the winter, so where possible like higher volume with relatively light weight.

    Other options:

Crazy flash Hope build with 15mm as required.

Stans ZTR 355 with XT hubs from Merlin, for half the price. Are the ZTR 355 rims too light for the intended use?

    Thoughts appreciated as ever.

welcome to the mid life crisis world of bikes. how much do u want to spend on the bits is the question?
get 140mm forks with lockout(dont worry about height adjustment) and the best rear shock u can afford (184mmx44mm) revelations are supposed to be good and i chose between those and fox floats, the fox won in the end as i liked the gold coating.
as for the tapered steerer, get one, the bike was designed to work with a tapered steerer and good thing have been said about it. 1 1/8 is a downgrade on the stock bike, a downgrade is never a good thing.

can u not get adapters for the crossrides? ive got crossmax'sand i can change the hubs from qr/15/20 using adapters.

    Anyone?

I have been looking online and I can get a good deal on a Sektor 120m to 140mm adjustable travel fork, which I think might suit the Trance X travel. Only thing is that I would want to try and run this with an existing QR wheelset - should I be going for some kind of bolt through option (15mm or 20mm)? It would obviously save e a lot of cash if I could use my existing old wheels.

I wouldnt use a qr fork longer than 100mm (but thats just me) Dont sell the build short, get a fork with a tapered steerer ( Reba or Revelation perhaps) and maybe think about a Hope front hub and get it laced to your existing wheelset. The Hope hub will convert between 9, 15 and 20mm.

u can buy a hope front wheel ready built new for 108 Hope Pro2 Wheels and Wheelsets probably find one cheaper if u look around. go for 15mm bolt through/tapered steerer, 140mm travel, with a wheel like the one mentioned above and that should keep u happy.
