Giant Trance Upper Pivot - Gap normal?

    2011 Giant Trance X

I just noticed this, but I recently changed my bearings and triple checked everything, the bearings are completely seated in the housing on the upper triangle as well, but for some reason the spacing is different from left (0.22mm gap) to right(0.53mm gap). The right side has more of a gap then the left side. The spacers are the same width , which was the first thing that came to my mind maybe the spacers are different from left to right, but nope. Is your like this? I'm just wondering if the left side will ever end up rubbing, its so close together.

    Hi there,

I have 2012 model which is the same frame as yours.
Have no pictures to send to you yet, but yes they all have the same gaps.
And I do not think they are loose in any way.

Cheers and hava look at my post of my converted Trance 650b.

You mean your right side has a bigger gap then the left side like mine?

Both my gaps were wider than yours, I think one was wider than the other.
It was checked properly for lateral play during the rebuild, it didn't take a lot of torque before the entire fitting tightened up perfectly, while still maintaining full movement of the ball bearings. So yes, you should be in safe hands.

So I took the left side apart again and got my handy socket and c-clamp out and pressed it in a smidge more, still not even with the right side. I'll just ride and hopefully nothing happens. =)

As the photos show, my right gap is also more than left.
If it worries you too much, remove the bolts of the seattube & shock, and test for lateral play. Tighten (gently) till its zero play. And at same time not so tight that friction causes rub on bearings. It ain't a propeller bearing.....

Most welcome ParkP, hope you ride with confidence now.

You frame seems like a matted alumminium coat, as opposed to my gloss black.
Does dirt/soil stick to it ? Do you find it easier to maintain to a gloss coated frame ?
I'm generally a fan of matte coats, both the ori alluminium and black colours looks great on Giants.

    Thanks

Yea, its I believe just clear coated over the bare aluminum. I like it. The dirt does not seem to stand out as much compared to a dark color coated frame, its really easy to maintain, also a big thing is it hides scratches very well. I've had a dark coated frame before and that thing you notice all the scratches.

Just to chime in here...after reading this I looked at my pivots and have a similar gap. Bike is basically brand new too, half a dozen rides. Glad to know it is normal. Cheers.
