    Anthem brake question...

I just picked up a new 2013 Anthem X 29er 2 and love almost everything about it...except the brakes. Looking to upgrade them to Elixir 9's or SLX's but have a question, since the Anthem has a 170mm rotor I'm curious if either of those brakes are a direct bolt on replacement?

I'm not sure about your question, but I will say - go SLX (2013 version or higher, M670 I think). Don't go with Avid brakes.

Not sure how much you weigh, but go ahead and get a 180mm rotor for the front. I'm not sure why Giant used a 170 up there. The weight savings in no way makes up for the decreased stopping power when you weigh over 200lbs. Plus it's the only 170mm rotor I've ever heard of.

Even if you need to buy a new rotor, go Shimano. I have the Anthem Advanced 1 with XT brakes and will never go back to Avid. Oh, I also have a 160mm rotor on the front and weight 200 pounds. There is plenty of stopping power with Ice Tech rotors.

Weird. I have a 2011 Anthem X 29er 2 and while it does have the Avid's on there, it came with a 185mm front rotor. I know for 2012 there were some downgrades to a point, but didn't think they would change rotor size.

I have the same bike and upgraded to Shimano XT brakes and an Ice Tech 180 front rotor immediately. The Avid brakes don't even come close to the Shimano's!

That's exactly what I'm doing here in a few days hopefully. Can't wait to ditch the Avid's!!

I'm pretty sure the 170 was something avid-specific that was introduced really recently. One of those bike industry solutions to a problem that doesn't exist. 160-185-200 choices are plenty granular. Coming up with a 170 is like deciding that there needs to be a 28.25" wheel in addtion to 650B (27.5") and 29. Sure, somebody would buy it, but does the world need it?

Rotors go with caliper mounts. If you change to a different size rotor with any brakes, you need to mount the caliper with approriate mounting hardware.

I'm a little under 200 and I like a 185 up front. But I wouldn't consider it strictly necessary. As davidcarson48 says a 160 will work. But I'm in Colorado, having something that spreads the heat around is worth the tiny increase in weight.
