    2013 Reign X

Ok, we know next gen Reign X is coming this summer so I hope we'll see some prototypes soon...

Any news, rumors, what changes will be on the frame? Beside new lower link of course

12 x 142 = Maybe (I see Specialized are reverting to 12 x 135 for their top end DH rig as it makes the rear end narrower.
Longer top tube = not required for me, I love the fit the way it is
Slacker HA = Yes 66.5 or even 66
Better lower link = YES!!!, wouldn't be hard to make it worse!
More attractive colour = Subjective but yes, 2012 colours are a bit naff.

    EDIT: And 1 x 10/11 gearing.
    And internal cable routing
    And 170mm fork

I guess we'll know after Interbike this Northern Hemisphere autumn.

It may even occur earlier, as there is a European 2013 range presentation next week in Spain.

believe what you will without even trying it...it's my experience after having ridden mine and an unmodified full 26" 2011 reign back to back that mine corners better, steers better, clears rock gardens and rooty techy terrain better, manuals better, and on and on...it's my opinion that low BB=faster cornering is a myth...i've dialed my bike in to suit me and it works.

euhh - that right there tells me that most of the riding you do doesn't involve high speed trails.

Anyone who tells me with a straight face that there are no advantages to a low bottom bracket simply doesn't ride any balls-out trails.

No myth here, just basic theoretical phycics.

you can go into theoretical physics all you want...while you're at it, go ahead and make up some theories of what kind of trails and how balls out i ride too...oh wait, you already did....

how about this: it's all tradeoffs, compromises if you will. i retract any words, hints, or intonations that i made that there are no (zero) benefits to a low BB, how's that for a compromise, me meeting you in the middle....(and the other naysayers...ahem ze loudmouth frenchie!!)

on that note, you can't tell me with a straight face there are no advantages to a higher BB either....each (relatively higher or lower BB heights) have their pros and cons, i choose higher. compromise.

Doesn't seem much different, except for the (awesome) addition of a roller style chain guide...

The other pictures showing linkage and BB detail are not of the Reign.

That aside, is it just me or does the geo look nice and slack? The fork appears to be Fox 32. One wonders if there will be a Reign X in the 2013 line up, may have to wait until Interbike to find out.

Is it beyond the capabilities of Giant to run internal cables? They seem to make frames with internal routing for everyone else but not for themselves? Come on Giant, get with the times.

The new trance 29er has internal routing. Which among other things, leads me to believe that that picture is not a 2013 reign..

On that picture is 2013 reign, color scheme looks to be similar to 2013 anthem and trance 29 and there is also iscg guide, which 2012 didnt have.

Still waiting for 2013 reign X...

The French text under this image clearly points out that this is the linkage of the 26" Reign. Looks like a pressed in BB to me.

but judging by the upper link it's a Women's Reign. So the regular men's reign MIGHT have a threaded BB.

I spy a coil shock and maybe a coil Lyric up front.

Edit: Here's hoping they got the lower link right and it's backward compatible with the 2010-12 bikes. I'll be keen to see some geo numbers in due course.

2013 bikes (almost all) will be more expensive than last year so some brands are downgrading their components to mantain the price to a point.

Well this is surprise that giant didn't update their reign x - it look the same as 2010-2012 generation. Usually they make update every three years, so in this case it doesn't look so...

not uncommon to have press launches or previews in hotel meeting rooms. Quite standard actually.

It's getting more and more expensive to build in China. Companies can either eat the increases they have to pay or pass them along to their customers. Bike companies can't really afford to shrink their margins which are tight to begin with. That's why the prices go up and the level of components seem to go down every year.

Aren't these bikes made in Taiwan?
I was always under the impression that prices stayed the same (roughly of course) yet the specs improved every few years as the high end (newer) technology trickled down.

where do these pictures keep surfacing from? There hasn't been a North America launch as far as I have heard or can find.

I have it from a decent source that carbon is on the way and I thought it was expected that the Reign X and Reign 0 were to kinda merge?

Those changes in your link are just expectation/wish from the writer.
From what we have seen so far, everything looks like the same except the graphic.

There are still reign and reign x models

With regards to the Reign posted on page 1 spec looks quite good but there are a few massive issues for me. Firstly that looks like an OD2 steerer/stem, means I can't get a 50 or 60mm stem. Secondly, the reign was screaming out for a fox 34. 150mm 32's are just not up to it unless you are a super lightweight. Thirdly, looks like a 2 ring crank, whick means I can't set it up 1 by without buying a new crank, Arrrrggggghhhhh.

If that is all they have in this category, they blew it. I'm a Reign X cult follower at this point, but new graphics and component spec doesn't even qualify as an update IMHO. R&D must be too busy working on silly 650B bikes or carbon 29er's. Sad, because back in 2007 they were cutting edge with the original RX geo and travel combination

Hell, they could have at least fixed the cable routing so it doesn't go down the front of the downtube. I find it hilarious that almost all their pros use some form of jury rigged cable routing to protect the cable and brake line.

see that is the problem, I don't think Giant is working on fancy 650b or carbon 29ers. They had the chance with the new Trance 29er but they decided to come out with it in aluminum. They play it safe. Lets test the waters with the trance 29er in aluminum and then if the demand is there we will make a carbon one next year.

Drives me crazy. You have companies like Intense coming out with a 650b carbon and aluminum at the same time, Santa Cruz comes out with the Tallboy LT and LTC at the same time, and yet Giant is slow slow slow to bring changes around.

I am still holding out hope that there is a carbon Reign coming out otherwise.....

Can't you just take the two rings off, get a 1x specific ring and bolt up a chain guide? That's what I did with my 08. And I'm pretty sure you can get whatever stem you want.

As for the stem, it sucks you don't have a choice but to buy from Giant. But they do make one.

With a 2 ring crank? They have a different BCD I thought, and your single ring wouldn't be sitting in the middle so would not give you a great chainline. Also, I'm in NZ, I don't think they bring the OD2 FR stem in

    170mm forks?

Would be interesting to know if the 2013 ReignX will come with 170mm forks (can't figure that out on the pics). The black ReignX 2 looks pretty awesome and is top of my "want-to-have-list". The only annoying thing ist that Giant still holds on to this silly OverDrive2 steerer tubes. If you want to change the fork you'll have a hard time to sell them for a proper price (if you can sell them at all).

Correct me if I am wrong
The overdrive 2 is the same as a normal taper head tube. If you sell your fork together with the headset, they can be installed on most bike

Yes, OverDrive2 has a normal ZS44/ZS56 headtube. So in combination with the headset the fork will fit in every frame with a tapered headtube. BUT you have to sell the headset and the stem with the fork. And not everyone likes to be fixed on a specific headset and a giant factory stem. So I guess the number of potential buyers will be very small or you have to sell the fork for a very low price.

Can you tell me exactly the dropout std for Reign X?

I'm expecting 142x12mm, since I got cheap M1800 days ago, otherwise I should re-sell the wheels.

The Reign X frameset is actually made in Giant's Netherlands factory (at least through 2012 they were.)

Edit: and msrp is exactly the same as the 2012

Now that the regular reign has iscg tabs. I wonder if it it will have the same lower link breakage problems as the reign x. Looking at the 2013 reign x frame, It looks like the lower link still has the cutout for the top iscg tab, which still makes the link thinner/weaker in that area. So unless they used some new super strength material for the lower link. It WILL have the same problem. Plus these new colors...! Giants design and engineering team=FAIL!!!

I always assumed the problem wasn't that the link was thinner and therefor weaker, but rather that the clearence between the link and the top iscg tab is so tight. If someone where to allow the lower link pivot bolts to loosen and then ride the bike like that, the rear end could flex laterally to the point that the link would strike the iscg tab when the shock returns from compression, potentially resulting in failure.

Have we actually seen 2011 and 2012 lower linkage breaks? Thought the problem was fixed. If that is thr case why are people still hounding on this issue with the newer reign x.

I would like to know if the lower links are still a problem for the newer models. And if anyone with 2011 and 2012 could chime in, it would be greatly appreciated. If Giant did fix them, then that would be great. It's just hard because Giant didn't acknowledge the problem, and correct me if I'm wrong. But I don't think they acknowledged it being fixed.

They did redesign a link, and it was an improvement, however lots of people have broken the new link, some even multiple times.

This post in the reign x broken lower link forum makes me suspect that they have redesigned the link for 2013...
    Hi all,

I got my new link today, and it's white! I'm not sure if it's 2012 or 2013, one thing is for sure though, it's a heck of a lot thicker than the 2011 link I just broke. It's substantially thicker where the ISCG goes (maybe 30 - 40%) and looks to be either taller or less material machined away for the ISCG in a vertical direction. I almost suspect this one might survive. I thought I had an excuse to by a Nomad Carbon, damn It still appears to be cast though, rather than machined from a billet, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up.

Giant NZ weren't too bad, turn around time through a branch of the shop I purchased the bike from was 7 days exactly.

Here's some photos of the new link. Unfortunately they wouldn't let me keep the old link so I can't photograph them side by side.

Edit: it was too good to be true. The link doesn't fit.

This must be a 2013 link, it just crashes straight into my ISCG tab. It will not work without filing the frame down.

Given that the 2012 links break too and they're my only other option, I'm going to push for a refund, failing that, I'll consider taking the bike shop to the disputes tribunal (a mediated court type thing).

I should also point that that Giant NZ sent a 2013 which they should know doesn't fit, even though they had a copy of my proof of purchase which states 2010 Reign X. So they're idiots.

I read that post also and suspect that they did redesign the link. It would be nice to get some kind of confirmation though. But from looking at the pictures. It looks like they did beef it up a bit. And makes me think that they thinned out the top ISCG tab for the new beefed up link.

I just installed one of the new, way more beefy links for mine. Just dremelled off the top ISCG tab completely. It has waaaay more material through the section prone to breakage, and I have it on good word that a local pro who shreds ten times harder than me (and is bigger) has abused the crap out of the new link and can't make it break. Stoked to give it my best effort, but have a feeling I will fail ;-).

I got the 2011 Reign X0! And I've had no issues with the lower link @225lbs with gear (knock on wood). So I heard that most chain guides will not work with the 2011 Giant Reign X ISCG 05 tabs because the threaded holes are "clocked" in a strange fashion, true? Can somebody please recommend a single ring, chain guide bash guard for me. I wanted to put on an ISCG E13 LG1 or Truvative XO or Blackspire DER Chainguide. Of those three options I think only the Truvative XO comes in a bottom bracket mount which I know will work because my bike currently has a MRP Lopes minimalist single ring guide with bottom bracket mount. However with the taco bashguard I wanted to keep forces off of the bottom bracket and would rather use the ISCG tabs... Any suggestions?! Thanks.

    2013 Reign X

The tabs are a bit rotated anti-clockwise, but it's nothing you can't fix with a bit of careful filing to elongate the guide mounting holes . Just be careful not to take too much material off, you don't want the screws any deeper in the tabs than they need to be, esp as the upper screw can contact the link. Original guide was an MRP but I don't it anymore having gone single. Let me know which one you settle on and how it works out

I went with the MRP G3 with bottom bracket mount. I didn't want to mess with the tabs...It's good, but the dropped seat stay makes it so that I have to rotate the whole guide counterclockwise more than I would have liked, but overall it's good and I love the G3, you can put the chain on so easy because the upper and lower guide can swing away and then back onto the guide for super easy chain installation at any point.
