    2011 Anthem X 29er 1 or 2014 model

I have the opportunity to buy a new old stock 2011 Anthem X 29er 1 with full XT and AE CR brakes for $2700 or a new 2014 model with SLX (except for XT RD) for $2875. 2011 is 3x10 versus 2x10 for 2014.

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

I'd opt for the 2014 so that I'd have a frame warranty.

I'm under the impression that the 2011 includes the lifetime frame warranty. Is this not the case?

Giant Bicycle, Inc. ("Giant") warrants the frame and rigid fork of each new Giant brand bicycle and Giant brand frameset to be free from defects in material and workmanship for as long as the original purchaser owns the bicycle. Paint finish and all other original components, and all Giant brand repair parts, replacement parts, and accessories, are warranted to be free from defects in material or workmanship for a period of one year from the original date of purchase. This warranty applies only to bicycles and framesets purchased new from, and assembled by, an Authorized Giant Retailer.

I don't see an effective date so I'm assuming this would apply to the 2011.

2011 used = not the original owner anymore, no warranty

2014 = original owner, thus, warranty

Edit: reading comprehension error! 2011 is new old stock, thus never owned.

I'd buy the 2011! Same frame. Sorry for adding confusion.

    I'd buy the 2014.

    1. It's likely an older version of XT, and the new version of SLX is very nice.
    2. SLX brakes are much better than Avids. It's worth the extra cost just in that.
    3. 2x10 is better than 3x10 in my opinion, especially for an XC bike.

Edit: RD is also ShadowPlus with the clutch to keep the chain from slapping as much.

'14 for all the reasons that fontarin stated. Shimano brakes are fantastic.

Your shop is asking waaaay too much for the 2011. It is by far the better deal. Get them to come down a lot and then go for it. Bicycle blue book puts the value of the bike at $1880. The shop needs to move it off the floor at this point so they can put out new inventory. Play hard ball with them.

Yeah, if you can get them to budge on price, that's a different story. I thought it was pretty insane to be offering the 2011 at that price to begin with. I got a much better discount on a 2011 in early 2012 than they're offering here.

If you can get the 2011 for less than 2k then get that. Yes the Avid brakes suck but brakes only make you slow down. And as a bonus, you get the dt350 rear hub. As stated full xt drive train. 3x10 is great and its easy to make 2x10 with a bash guard. Also you don't have the funky overdrive 2 front end so your stem will be a normal 1 1/8 so swapping stems will be super easy if you want to adjust your cockpit. Just as a reference I got my 11 Anthem X1 in December of 2011 for 2500 out the door.

I'd go the 2011 if the price is right, but haggle hard on price. What they are asking is way too high. As others have mentioned its the same frame except it doesn't have dropper post cable mounts. as its new and you are the first owner it will have a frame warranty. Just check that with the shop. If no warranty they are effectively selling you a second hand bike. Take more cash off the price

I am in a similar situation and maybe someone can lend some advice. My local shop has 2011 Giant Anthem X 29er 2 that is new old stock. I read in a couple of places that the 2011 frame had a recall on it.

Any ideas about the recall issue or is there a way to tell if its been repaired?
Unfortunately, the dealer is the only one around my area and they do not have much info on the recall.

Also I noticed a bit of oil around the rear shock. Is that normal or indicative of a problem?

Is there a big difference in quality between the 2014 x1 shocks vs. the 2011 x2?

    Thanks for any help.

That bike should be a screaming deal. The oil is normal and the frame is fine.

I went and spoke with the LBS and they want $2500 for that 2011 model. Seems way high for a 2011 model.
