I got this bike used (1 season) as a frame only early in 2003 and built around. Mavic D 3.1 Tubeless rims with black DT spokes and Michelin Comp 32 tire (2.8) front and Comp 24 (2.5) rear, Mr Dirt Gizmo chainguide and Race Face North Shore cranks, Thomson seatpost, Race Face Diabolus stem, Azonic PDW handlebar, re-painted 00 Boxxer with new seals, Fox Vanilla RC (the DH-1 came with the dreaded RS Pro Deluxe shock and I didn't want to take the chance to blow it while riding), XT disc brakes with 8-inch rotors. Weight is a touch under 42 lb.
I got this bike because I wanted to start in DH (I'm rather a cross-country/enduro rider) and I've always liked it from an aesthetic point of view (yes, I'm the kind of person who cares a lot about the looks. Never will I sacrifice the efficiency or quality of the ride, but when you shed a few grands on a bike, you want it to be to your taste). After making sure that it was a good bike by talking and reading about it, I just keep my eyes opened and finally found this one (my other choices were the 01 or 00 Foes Mono - very hard to find here, in Quebec and the FSR DH, too long and prone to break at the welds, I've been told).
I only had the chance to ride it 3 times in 2003 (my rides are mainly XC, so I don't use it much) and I still have to get used to the weight balance (the bike has a tendency to " squat ", but I think it's common on many DH bikes) and improve my DH riding level :-), but all in all, the bike is way up to the task for me and I plan on riding it a little bit more next year.
