We all started somewhere. My first bike was a Wal-Mart Next Full Suspension.I was 12 and I thought it was the coolest thing ever! Then I got a Schwinn Frontier FS, then a Schwinn Mesa GSX, a 2008 Mongoose Otero Super, a 2009 Mongoose Otero Super and finally my current bike a 2011 Giant Trance X4. What bike got you started into the sport? I know some of you are alot older than me and have probably had tons of bikes so put whatever is most relavent. Also post a picture of your current bike and if possibe your first bike. Happy posting!
For me it would have to be a 2008 Trek 6000 (I haven't been riding that long). I used to ride a GT Palomar, and I'd occasionally take it out on the Trails, but then a co-worker of mine started taking me to some really cool spots, and I found out that I really enjoyed it, and decided to get a new bike.
I broke the Trek 6000 a year later, but luckily Trek replaced it with a 8500.
Although I prefer the smaller boutique bike companies, I can't argue that Trek has a pretty good warranty replacement plan.
My first would have been whatever my first bmx bike was back in the early 80's. I got to tall for those little 20 inchers and I just switched out to a Mongoose Hilltopper Tange cromo in 1992.
Had many bikes as a kid, but the one that "got me started" into Mt Biking was a 1996 or 1997 Schwinn Frontier. I tried to find a photo on Bikepedia, with no luck.
My first bike was a chrome GT BMX (looked like the one above, a friend gave it to me ... was probably stolen, but I was 8, I had no idea). That bike took SUCH a beating.
First bike I rode on dirt was one of these bad boys...
Last year when I started MTB I got a Kona Lana'i to get me going, and a couple of weeks ago I got a Specialized Pitch since our trails are way too much for that hard tail. Its now my commuter.
I had one just like this only it was badged as a Coast King from Coast to Coast Hardware. Saved up with a summer job when I was 11 and bought it myself. 1974.
My first "mountain bike" ? Huffy. With "Mountain Geometry." From Schucks Auto Parts. 1987.
My first mountainbike ride was on a friend's dad's Kestrel in 1992 when I was about 16. I had a blast, so I started saving up and bought my first bike, a Cannondale Super V 400. I loved that bike and rode it down the trail to life long passion.
First one I can really remember was some 24" K2 bike with "suspension fork."
And then an old Stumpy for a while. It was really not much better than the K2, in my eyes.
First bike that I actually took onto the trails? Why, a 2007 KHS Alite 300, of course. And it's still my only mountain bike and I'm still riding it. That headset could use a first servicing though....
My first real FS was a 2001 C'dale Gemini 1000, great bike to learn geometry changes on with it's adjustable rear travel.
Before that: Trek 8100
Before that: GT BMX
I was a BMX racer, working in a shop surrounded by mountain bikers......so, after much pressure from said mountain bikers, in 1994 I bought a Schwinn Paramount RS30.
I had mountain bikes when I was a kid, from a Marin with a whacky paint job in the 90's to a Hard rock. What got me started riding as an adult, however, was a Marin Nail Trail that I bought in 2002 or so. From there I got a Novara Ponderosa.
It was somewhere around 1963 probably when my dad bought me my first "2 Wheeler". It was a red bike, red fenders, pull back bars, 20" wheels, single speed and I wrote "Race Car 22" on the fenders woth a black magic marker . Dad didn't believe in training wheels so I had a few skinned up elbows and knees I'm sure. I learned real quick to head for the grassy area when I started getting sqirreley!
I had lots of bikes (BMX's) as a kid and teenager. Had a cheap Wal-Mart bike in early 20's I did some slight trail riding with. Then my girl got me a Wal-Mart FS 2 years ago and I started earlier this year in real MTB'ing and recently got my 2011 Marlin.
This isn't a mountain bike, but I used to ride it on dirt all the time anyway. Used to really cheese-off my dad.
My first mountain bike was this Walmart "disposable" I bought to commute to my college classes so I didn't have to worry about my Sprint getting stolen. It saw mostly concrete and asphalt, but I did ride in on a trail a few times and it performed surprisingly well. It rattled like it was going to come completely apart coming down a flight of concrete stairs, though.
Sadly, I have no photos of my current bike. I'm too busy riding it to take photos, I guess. It's a slightly upgraded 2011 Marlin.
Nam was raging and my dad was working on the analog control system for the engine air inlet cone on the SR71
(The SR71 was top secret at the time - didn't know about it until it was declassified and he could talk)
(For you tech types - The cone kept sub Mach 1 air flowing into the engine when it went to Mach 1 thru 3. It moved in and out to change the shape of the shock wave. Yes, they did that with analog controls!)
1988 Raleigh Technium Chill
Aluminum tubes bonded to chromoly lugs
Wishbone mono seatstay
under the chainstay U brake
top mount thumb shifters
6 speed freewheel
biopace chain rings
It changed my life!
The picture below looks a year or 2 more modern than my old one, but has the same color scheme. by 1989 I think they converted from curved forks to straight blades, from U brakes to seatstay mounted canti's, and from biopace to round chainrings.
