Very interesting topic. Here is something I found.

Interest in the drug among antidoping experts was further increased by a study conducted at Stanford University and published in 2006 in The Journal of Applied Physiology. The study indicated that some participants taking Viagra improved their performances by nearly 40 percent in 10-kilometer cycling time trials conducted at a simulated altitude of 12,700 feet a height far above general elite athletic competition. Viagra did not significantly enhance performance at sea level, where blood vessels are fully dilated in healthy athletes.
This is slightly hilarious, and slightly alarming. When I arrived in Sun Valley Idaho (6000' elevation) for XC Nationals this year, I felt the elevation strongly. After all, I am coming from a town at <200 feet elevation. In the bike shop as I was joking around with the Techs, I told them how I felt and they jokingly said, "take a Viagra". Now, I just laughed it off thinking they were trying to get me a hard-on in my lycra, but I guess there is some substance to what they said...

I dont believe it has been banned yet. Right? But I still wouldnt take it for "obvious" reasons.

If it is not banned yet, it will be banned soon even if science shows its not that helpful in cheating. Look at Human Growth Hormone, it doesn't do squat for an endurance athlete(or any athlete for that matter[it is debatable among researchers whether it improves sprint performances]) but it is still banned.

Its becoming a scary world we live in regards to doping in sport. The testing technology has improved drastically, but so have the chemicals used to cheat. The only real solution is to hold onto urine samples and retest them every few years once a new Designer Drug has been discovered by the testers.

I hear caffeine is a performance enhancing drug. We should ban coffee.

That NFL story was interesting, saw that when Chicago's Marshall was talking about Viagra being used as a PED. Some people will grasp anything they can to try for an advantage I guess

I tried it, but it changed my head tube angle too much. I don't need it poking out that much.

I'd be curious about the side effects. I don't race and don't ever intend to get back into it, but I do know that the better shape I'm in, the more fun I have riding. Getting up hills instead of walking, more downhills in a given amount of time, etc.

So if I traveled to a high elevation area and I wanted to get the most out of my trip, maybe viagra would be a safe way to help me out? This is hypothetical as I don't expect to have the money or time to take a trip to some mountains for mtbing.

It's a washed. Riding promotes impotent, the blue pills promotes, well you know. So it's a washed

My wife does triathlons and at a big race in Vermont she noticed all the women taking blue bills. She asked what it was and was told it was low dose cialis. She said that close to 50% of the women in her class were taking it.

Uh, not if a little blue pill is involved.

shame. if I was in it for the competition, I'd demand the race organizers give me my money back or start booting people for PED use.

I don't do many races, though, and when I do, I'm more interested in my own time and not anyone else's.

I agree that growth hormone does nothing on the endurance level but more on speedy recovery of tired or torn muscle in multiple or successive races like Tour de France or ABSA Cape Epic. Also, it helps older athletes supplement the loss of performance due to age related reasons.

I also agree that Viagra helps in high altitude performance but I'm still not sure that it should be banned since it can reduce the effects of altitude sickness and jet lag. The stiffness with this drug be a dead give away and will be awkward in tight cycling shorts or an advantage if you win if you know what I mean.

    This thread derailed quickly!

I would be surprised that Vespasianus's wifes competition actually told her they were popping pills.

You would think that if someone was taking drugs for an advantage, they wouldnt talk about it... Maybe since it isnt banned they had no shame...

It is possible that this is true. After all Viagra and Cialis is an open topic in mountaineering and technically these drugs are still legal(loop hole). I have at least two varsity friends(basketball) who admitted to me that they are using steroids in college and more than ten classmates in college(medical degree) who actively using Meth to pass the test and take some pressure off(one of them stole my lighter for my alcohol torch for no apparent reason). All of them are surprisingly honest that even I couldn't believe it at first.

I find the whole Tri scene to be really interesting. These are, for the most part, all amateur races but the stuff that is taken is crazy. I always wondered who too that 5 hour energy crap but it seems to be as important as water at some of those events.

I'd definitely be at a disadvantage if I took Viagra while riding. The massive volume of blood it takes to fill leg #3 wouldn't leave much for the other two.
Use it, use it, use it while you still have it.
