    Tubeless & Rim Tape

What is the purpose of the Stan's notubes tape in a tubeless setup? Is it necessary to use the tape on tubeless ready rims? If so, then why are are the rims called "tubeless ready" and how are they different from rims that are not?

    Thanks
    Jesus

    Re: Tubeless & Rim Tape

Tubeless ready generally means there are sme small cheap steps t make to go tubeless. I.e. rim tape, rim strip, etc, to cover the spoke holes and make them air tight.

Tubeless rims don't need any tape. There are no spoke holes. So no need for tape. I.e. mavic UST rims and most shimano Tubeless stuff.

But there must be some difference between "tubeless ready" and "standard/other" rims? Because if "tubeless ready" needs tape than I don't see any advantage with respect to rims that are not airtight because of spoke holes. After all, Stan's tape is supposed to work even on rims with holes.

Mostly semantics. The best tubeless/tubeless ready rims are UST compatible. The inner bead shape matches the bead shape of UST compatible tires for an airtight seal and retention. Many UST spec rims do need tape to seal the spoke holes.

Notubes rims are not UST spec and Notubes tape and rim strips do not make standard rims UST spec either.

The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common
