I'm planning to buy and build up a Soma B-side singlespeed. This will be the second bike I've bought part-by-part...that's part of the fun for me.
But the headset thing is driving me nuts. I always buy the frame first, then the fork and headset. I can't figure this one out.
Soma says this about the B-side:
CNC-machined 44mm headtube: Will take 1-1/8" steerers with a ZeroStack 44 headset or tapered steerers with a ZS44 upper assembly and external cup (EC44) lower assembly
Very specific. Thanks Soma. I want to use a tapered fork so that means I need ZS44 upper and EC44 lower. Easy peasy!
I get on Jenson and see that Cane Creek has several sizes and models available. I look at the list and...no EC44? They have EC30, EC34, EC37, and EC49. Gimme a break! FOUR sizes of EC lowers and not the one I need?
I look at Chris King: EC30, EC34, EC37, EC49, and EC56.
Still no EC44? WTF? Did Soma size their headtube to a size no one makes?
I can find the upper (ZS44) but not the lower EC44.
The 29er experiment proved that 26" wheels were just fine and that 650b wheels are completely unnecessary.
