Is there helmet safety standard diff. between countries?

Just wondering if there is a helmet safety standard (certification) difference between countries? Or is it international certificated?
Lets say if I buy a helmet online (overseas eg US or Swiss), is it LEGALLY wearable for downhill or road competition in other countries? eg OZ.

    Thank you for that huffster.
The reason why I've asked is that I'm seeing, already seen TWO occasions where bike police has fulled over group of casual riders and checking the helmets.
It was mainly for certification and cracks/faults.
I thought it was urban myth that police fulling over bikers for defects but not anymore.

In Australia, not sure there is a standard for full face helmets (in the past any full face helmet was ok for downhill racing), road competition "locals" require an "Australian standards sticker" my understanding is overseas competitors can wear a helmet from there home country.
