Slide out back tire

I was riding on a dirt trail and this biker gets in front of me and he manages to slide out his rear tire and spray some of the dirt. Any idea what this is called and how to do it?

It was almost like a whip but going in a straight line, on the ground.

My only guess is he picked up his rear tire a little and scraped it to the side.

I can't tell exactly what you are describing. But I ride with a couple of guys that grew up riding motocross.

They both do a little rear tire whip thing that is kind of cool. They can use the rear tire to flick things like pine cones off the trail. It isn't pronounced enough that I would call it a skid or a slide. It is just a little rear tire lift half inch or so off the ground and then a little tail whip of the bike. They can send pine cones and small rocks shooting off the side of the trail. It is a low speed maneuver, and I don't recall ever seeing any dirt spraying anywhere.

Steering with the back tire is the only way you can control your direction when things get very steep and loose.
