Sizing when changing drop bars to flat bars

I found a 1997 Trek 1220 on CL that I might buy and put on a flat bar (prolly sell the Shimano RSX components). The tires are dead so it will be hard to test the fit. The bike is 52cm, which is a little small for my 5'8 and 33" inseam (54cm would be optimal), but I thought it might work once I put on a new stem/bar to fit.

In your experience, would this work, or will it just feel "small" regardless?

    Thanks!

(fairness in posting: crosspost to bikeforums.net but slow response!)

I would not get a bike that you feel is too small to convert to a flat bar. I changed my 58cm ( I am 6'1") bike to a flat bar and am using a 110mm stem and the cockpit feels a little short when standing but it does work well, i used the same seat to bar distance as my mountian bikes so it feels like home.

Thanks LDH. That's my plan too - to have somewhat of a MTB feel. I think I'll pass on the bike.
