    Hello All.

Good evening, er morning, whatever time it is if you ever read this.

I'm getting back in to the hobby after a 18 year hiatus. I'm a Clydesdale rider having recently dropped myself down to 286 Lbs and I'm looking for a bike. I'm thinking bout a 29er hard tail.

Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

Hey I'm Jason. I've been riding trails on dirt bikes since I was eight and recently sold my roadie and bought my first mountain bike in June. I spend a lot of weekends in Lake Arrowhead (I'm here now) as my parents have a second residence here. I'm about to go on a 14 mile loops. Happy Trails!

1.) Orange County, have lived in LA since '04.
2.) Weekend warrior, generally ride XC but go to Snow Summit every once in awhile for some fun downhill singletrack.
3.) My mountain bike (SC Heckler) and spin bike. (Also have 3 dirt bikes, but those don't count)
4.) I rode mountain bikes growing up in the bluffs behind my house, but first year on a real bike.

Howdy. New member, figure it's time for a quick intro!

1.) Where you are from? (as specific as you care to share)
I live in the south Chicagoland area. I recently wrecked my Suzuki Katana and the cycling bug bit me soon after. I found out about the Palos trails in my area so I figured it's time to pick up a decent bike.

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all
mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)

Beginner/Weekend warrior/trail rider.. All in one I guess.

3.) How many bikes you own?
Right now I only own an older mongoose 4tec (or something along those lines.) I am in the process of purchasing a Trek 4500.

4.) How long have you been riding?
I been riding frequently for a few months now.

5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)
T-Nation.com I am an amateur bodybuilder and I got my pro strongman card a few years back.
FriendlyFireGaming.net a gaming community that I actually run myself.

Either way, it's good to meet you all!
    -Tomas

PS- Here is a photo of my buddy and I after we hit the trails. I am the one on the right.

    Canada

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? (ex: beginner, weekend warrior, all
mtn/trail rider, XC racer, downhiller, singlespeeder, 29er rider, etc...)
Beginner mountain biker, weekend warrior, soon to be 29er rider maybe...

3.) How many bikes you own?
1 - a Supercycle Hooligan purchased from Canadian Tire for $150. I have used it for everything - rough trails, cycling races, cruising while on vacation, etc. ... and it's barely holding together.

I am looking to purchase an XC Hardtail now - possibly a 29er

4.) How long have you been riding?
I have been riding fairly consistently for the past 2 years.

5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)
    Here now I guess

    Hello Everyone!

New to the forum, and look forward to learning as much as I can about bikes and riding!

    A little background:

I live in the great state of Utah and have been riding for just under 1 year. My ride; 2010 Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc, with upgraded Rockshox Recon Silver Solo Air TK fork w/poploc (love this bike!). Been lurking around for awhile, and everyone is really helpful, which is nice!

    See you on the trails!

    Hello!

I've been Mountain Biking since the mid '90's, but have been pretty inactive the last few years. This summer, I've got back in the swing of things again and I'm enjoying it just like old times.

1.) Where you are from? Southwest Missouri - I'm an Ozark's Hillbilly!
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? I guess the term now is "All Mountain" - a new term to me! I ride off road 99% of the time, mostly singletrack, just for fun.
3.) How many bikes you own? Just one, my trusty old Giant ATX 980 Full Suspension... from '97 I think.
4.) How long have you been riding? Since the mid 1990's.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites) Mostly train forums.

    Good to be here!

    - Moved to Bend, Or in Jan '11 from San Clemente, Ca

    - I would consider myself in XC/AM ridder, newer to the sport but charing harder every day

    - I own two bikes, first is my starter bike a Kona Hoss HT, and now Im pimping out my radical '05 Jamis Dakar Sport. Im enjoyin the new hobby that is regularly draining my bank account.

    - Started riding back in Cali a few years ago, but after poison oak showed up after every ride, I quit that. No poison oak in Bend!

    - Love the reviiews, use them to aid in my purchases. Ans now am on the verge of doing a 650B build and those forums are great. Oregon forums are good too.

thanks for the mecca of good MTB feedback, and appreciate all the cool people that share .

    Cheers

    1. I'm from SLO county, California
    2. I do a lot of "all mountain" styled riding and like to hit some nice sized jumps when I find them.
    3. I own two bikes. My mountain bike and my road bike.
    4. Nearly as long as I can remember. My dad got me on a bike when I was at least 4 years old and I loved it. My earliest memory of riding is the day I got my training wheels off and ate it.
    5. as far as forums go, I browse two. this one and GC

My favorite trail isn't a local one as I loved Canada a lot when I was there.
My bike is currently a Norco Range 3 with an X0 drivetrain, Specialized Phenom saddle, Loco rear wheel, WTB Freerider front, Straitline Defacto pedals, ODI grips, and the rest is stock.

    realized I never checked in

    New to mountain bikes

40 years old- never in to to bicycles or mountain biking. Recreational dirtbiker since high school, kids ride dirtbikes too. Recently moved to Slovenia (from US) so we sold our dirtbikes and bought mountain bikes. We were told riding dirtbikes is quite expensive here but mountain biking is very popular and easy to access. The riding here is great but bikes are quite expensive.

    Greetings

I live in western Kentucky, we have some great trails in the area, including the Canal Loop in LBL and the Harrisburg Mountain area in southern Illinois.

I'm 58, I raced USCF 3s and 4s in the 80s-91 or so. My first mountain bike was a Ross that weighed more than 40 lbs. I then got a no suspension Gary Fisher, followed by a dual suspension Y bike and a Jekyll 700. I currently ride a Trek HiFi Deluxe.

I ride to stay in shape and maintain my weight. I get to the trails every weekend that I can, and ride on the street during the week.

I ride a Kawasaki Concours when I don't want to pedal up hill, so I frequent the COG forum a bit.

    Hello Everyone!

    Hello everyone,

I wanted to make a quick post to introduce myself. I'm from Moncton, New Brunswick in Canada, eh . I am not a pro rider by any means, I enjoy single track and tend to mess around a bit with anything that I wont hurt myself on, I started riding motocross when I was 6 and kept going on MT bikes or dirt bikes most of my life.

I currently only own one bike and that is my 2010 Trek Fuel Ex 5 which I'm loving.

Santa cruz bullit, triple 8, 5th element

I ride as much possible, but need to know more DH trails in Summit County. I haven't found or heard of much DH trails in the county. The ones I know are boring help me. Hoping I can find some through this forum

    Hi !!!

Hi, all. Jason from Florida, here.
I guess I would consider myself a beginner XC rider although I grew up racing BMX, but just got back into riding XC a little under a year ago.
I was riding an entry level TREK 3900 untill about 2 month ago when I upgraded to a specialized 29er. What a change!!!
This is the first forum I've been on and was hopping to get some suggestions and feedback from other who have gone to the 29ers!

Hey mtbr, my name is Alex and I'm from Sacramento, California.

I'd consider myself a beginner/intermediate trail/all-mountain rider. Have been riding since I was a kid starting with BMX in grade school and I'm just now starting to get more serious into biking.

Right now I'm riding on a Hardrock, looking to buy a new FS bike soon.

Been riding since about 2000 when I got into BMX for a few years and then became just an occasional recreational rider. Started getting more serious back into riding trails a few months ago.

Been reading up here and on pinkbike to try and soak up what I can. Love all the great info from both sites so far.

    wow

This seems like a very unfriendly site. I've given the info required. I need some advice from riders, but can't even post here. Mountain biking is all about freedom, no restrictions. The owners of this site should try to remember that...too many rules, restrictions on this site. Can't even join up without being slammed first thing. Just sayin' )

    David here.

    1.) Where you are from?
Born in Georgia. Moved to Loch Sheldrake, New York at 15. Lived in Kodiak, Alaska for 3 years. Now I live in Uncasville, CT.
2.)What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
    I'm a complete noob.
3.) How many bikes you own?
I'm so noob I don't have one yet. Or does my Ducati 748 count? Vacation check next month will be fixing this! Have a lot of bike shops in the area. Lots of test riding and talking price.
4.) How long have you been riding?.
I rode a lot when I was a kid. Rode a bike to work in Alaska. Didn't have a car. Led a pretty lazy life as a adult. Time to get back to having some fun outdoors!
5.) What forums do you frequent most?

    Listen! Howdy Folks!

    1. I was born in Belize, Central America. Grew up like a military brat. I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area in Texas.
    2. Commuter & Weekend Warrior. In high school, I lived 10 miles (16 km) from school. Biked to/from school most days. A cheapo 24" road bike with a child seat on the back. Now, I commute to work most days (6+ miles / 10+ km each way) on my 26" Mongoose Blackcomb. I am also an Assistant Scoutmaster with the BSA. My Blackcomb goes camping with us.
    3. A mostly stock Mongoose Blackcomb (Red) 26" MTB with a few accessories.
    4. I've been riding 2-wheelers about 85 - 90% of my life, since the late 1970's.
    5. For bikes, just this forum.

Yup! There's my brain-bucket resting on my rear luggage rack.
Brain-buckets are both Fox3 mandatory and BSA mandatory.

    Smile Hello

    Hi all,

I'm going to combine this as my 'hi there' thread and a question I'm hoping someone can help me with. :-)

I live in Melbourne (Australia) and I've been riding since I was a kid. Raced MTB seriously for a few years and did pretty well. Had a massive smash at Whistler in Canada and tore apart my shoulder so had to stop MTB for a bit. Have had a road bike since then and am getting an MTB again soon. Currently riding a SRAM Red road bike w/ Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL wheels (I'm digitalformula on flickr, if you want to look for a photo of it - can't include a link as I haven't posted 10 posts, yet). My favourite MTB so far, even while racing, was the one attached to this post - Maverick ML7 that I had to sell before going travelling.

Anyway, I'm pretty close to buying a Cannondale Scalpel 2 but I'm currently a fat b*stard at around 91kg as I've been unable to train for ages. My usual race weight is around 74kg and I'm aiming for that again. It'll be a while but in the mean time ...

Will I break a carbon fibre bike like the Scalpel 2? I don't want to spend $6000 and then break the bike ... that'd suck. As I said, I raced for years and know what I'm doing so I'm confident I won't break the break due to bad riding - it's my current weight that concerns me.

If I'm too fat, tell me. I've got thick skin. :-)

    So, hello, and thanks! :-D

Haha, thanks for replying Andrew. 91kg is fat for me - I'm only 175cm tall. :-)

Hey everyone! Name's Dan. I'm from (and currently reside in) Loretto, PA. I'd describe myself as a beginner, xc, 29er rider, and forum roamer. As of today, I own 3 bikes: a '11 Trek Skye SL Disc (the wife's), an '09 Trek 3900 swapped to Sram x7 and Hayes Stroker Ryde (I use this as a sort of commuter/road/trainer bike), and a brand new '12 Giant XTC 29er 1. I've been riding for about 2 years now. It all started one day at the Allegrippis trails (central PA). I couldn't believe how much fun the rolling, smooth single track was. After that, I was hooked. I also enjoy the serenity of being in the outdoors with just myself and a bike. The exercise certainly helps too!

    Howdy...

I'm Chris from No. VA. I'm primarily a roadie (raced in '80s and early '90s). Back in the day I used my USCF license to race MTBs in cyclocross races. My 1st MTB was an original Fisher HooKooEKoo (rigid - 29.5 lbs). My second MTB is also my current one... a 1995 Giant ATX 890.

I joined the forum to get upgrade advice, but can't start threads till I've posted more (DOH!).

The ATX 890 was a pro level bike in its day (full XT, 24sp) - it's weakest part was the heavy (5.5lb) Marzocchi XC500 air/oil fork. For awhile, I put a 3 lb. Manitou SX Ti fork on it and the bike - at just under 24 lbs - was a top-performing hard tail. However, the SX Ti is not around anymore and the Marzocchi is leaking like a seive. Rebuild kits for the Marzocchi were rare in the day and impossible to find now.

SOooo - I'm looking at replacing a fork on a 16 year old bike so I can ride singletrack with my 15 year old son - the question is whether it is worth it?

While I learned to ride off-road on a rigid bike and know how to float over obstacles, I've also put on weight (200lbs), so I'm afraid that cheap Dart/XCM/RST forks won't last.

The original ATX geometry is for a fork with 63mm of travel, but it handled the 80mm SX Ti just fine and is already set up for a 1 1/8 threadless steerer. A 100mm travel fork would probably slacken the geometry too much, so I think an 80mm XC fork is what I would want. A Rock Shox Tora or above would be nice, but they all have too much travel. The new 2012 Rock Shox XC32TK is equivalent to a 2011 Tora TK (but only comes in 100mm) and the XC28TK (that comes in 80mm) is equivalent to a Dart with Turnkey lockout. In the middle is the XC30TK that comes in 80mm form, has 30mm stanchions that fall between the Dart (28mm) and Tora (32mm). None of these sub-$200 forks has replaceable bushings, but spring and seal kits are available.

So, at ~$200 ($165 for XC30TK + $40 installation), is it worth it to upgrade, or should I save the money and put it towards a new bike?

    Hey!

I grew up in NJ and I came out to Colorado in '93 and love this Longmont area! I've been riding about 10 years. I've got a K2 road bike, a Trek Fuel EX8 all mountain, and a vintage around-town Canondale. I like the trails around the Boulder area but I've been to Fruita and it sure is beautiful out there!

    Hello all.

Absolute new to this world of bikes.

Checking in from San Diego, CA.

I bought a Diamondback Overdrive 29er a few weeks ago and now looking to sell it.

I rode it twice around the block twice and got chased by a few dogs, so back to the gym I go.

Anyways, I know this is not the classified section, so I will post an ad for the bike.

Hey guys, new rider from Tennessee here!
I consider myself a noob all mountain rider.
My set of wheels right now is a Specialized Hardrock Sport 29er.
I've been riding for about all my life, but on MTBs only about 2 months ago.
I frequent Tennesseemountainbike.com alot, and lurk on here too.

    Hello all
My name is Tim and I live ride and work in southern NH
Due to health reasons, and getting burnt out on riding I hung up my Kleins 8 years ago.
Due to health reasons I am back.
I was an intermediate XC racer. My current mtb is a 98 Klein Attitude pro.
Been riding off and on since I could push a pedal.
The other forums I frequent are 1130cc.com (My road bike is a HD VROD) and Totally Yamaha (snowmobile)
I am impressed with this site and the general advancement of bikes.

    Hi All,
Dave from RI here checking in....I'm not necessarily new to biking but I am the whole Mt bike thing, I've logged many miles on my 11 yr ol Trek 720 Multi Track, and decided to go another route for my next.
I still currently own and ride the 720 but looking at a Specialized Rockhopper I've found used.
This is the first mtbr forum, usually on the fishing and kayaking sites.
    Looking to learn alot here.
