Hello from NW GA. Completely new to bike forums, and completely ignorant of a great many things I should probably know. Bear with me. I'll probably have more questions than answers.

1.) Where you are from? NW GA
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Beginner
3.) How many bikes you own? 3, if you count my road bike
4.) How long have you been riding? Since the 70s - before the BMX craze hit. I took a long hiatus, and am back riding again.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? This is the first forum I've joined in years. After spending time modding a golf forum, I needed a break from the whole forum scene. Too many jerks, and life's too short.

    Hey There

    Hi

    Live in Raleigh, NC
Nowadays I'm considered an Intermediate (Insurance/Work)
Own a Santa Cruz Tallboy, Trek Mamba, Specialized Cross Trail which I'm trying to sell
Since the 80's first bike was a Diamond Back Apex, started MTB in AZ
    Club700XX-ATV, THOG-Biking

As you can see, been riding for a long time and mainly MTB since I can't stand riding on regular roads (too many idiots on the phone or texting)

Raleigh has allot of MTB nearby so I purchase the Tallboy for that reason.

hi im justin, i am from south carolina, definitely a beginner to adult mountain bike riding. I havent bought a bike yet bc I dont know the reputations of the companies yet but i have narrowed it down to a Scott Genius, Devinci Atlas, Specialized Camber, Niner Rip, or Lapierre XR. I want something that is good at everything bc im not sure what type of riding i want to do yet, plus i want to be able to sale it without losing a ton of money if I decide to sale it. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks

    Hi Folks, Merry Christmas,

I'm from Reading, Berkshire, UK, and I guess I'm a weekend warrior - looking forward to the lighter nights to ride more frequently. I'm motivated by fitness (my current lack of), losing weight, and the countryside surrounding my home.

I'm on my 4th bike as an adult, I think I also went through 4 bikes growing up - plus the tricycle!!

I have a very non standard Kona Smoke 29er - the only original thing being the frame, forks, bar & stem - the latter two things being what the LBS tell me to change to make the bike great!!

I've been riding on and off my whole life, culminating in 2008 with a cycle down the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Then the new girlfriend arrived, not at all into cycling, but we became equipped with new wheels and now enjoy picnics and trips to nearby towns in summer.

Earlier this year I did the London to Brighton night ride, and now with 6 months to go before a wedding I'm back on the bike and looking to ride regularly to get toned and shed the excess pounds.

I've been reviewing these forums for ages - trying to get to 10 posts so I can submit a link to a photo of my ride!! I guess the beginner & 29er forums get most of my time as well as the reviews which are invaluable, and I hope to add to in due course.

    From Atlanta, GA.
Started mountain biking in 1990, before suspension forks and clipless pedals.
Raced in CO and CA before moving back east.
    Stopped riding for a decade
    Just got back into.

4 more posts before I can ask the question I registered to ask about...

    I'm new

    Hello all,
I'm Todd and I am new here as of a few minutes ago. I just got back into mountain biking and i'm excited to be riding again. I'm 42 and just purchased a Specialized Rockhopper Pro (2013 model) all black with Shimano Deore XT PD-M785 Pedals on it. It is a nice looking bike. However I really need to get my endurance built up so I can get into more rugged terrain. The hills here in Austin are tough but should get me into shape within a month, (give or take). I think winter temperatures will be the deciding factor with how long it actually takes. I'm getting over having a sore buttox from the saddle since I have not rode a bike in several years. My previous bike was the Specialized Ground control FSR "Y" frame bike. I recently sold it, it was 17 years old. I bought the Specialized GB RBX Shorts, these help a lot and are very comfortable. Anyway, glad to be here....I'll be reading more topics daily.

    Todd

    Just anothern FNG checking in

Hey, all! Just another FNG checking in...so, in keeping with the rules of the forum, here's the scoop on me:

Not really new to mountain biking as I was pretty deep into it in the late '90s when I was in the military. Rode a Cignal Zanzibar hard-tail and loved it, and it got even better when my son got into it and rode with me! This was in Hampton, Virginia and the trails we rode weren't "official" trails in that they weren't kept up by any organization - a group of MTBRs got together and made the trails, then performed upkeep maintenance on them as needed. All I know is we had a blast and I was in the best shape of my life!

Got out of it when I retired from the service and moved up North, and after a 14 year absence my wife and I are now getting back into it. This is her first foray into the MTBR world, and she's as excited about it as I am! She has a Trek 6200 and I have a Trek 3700 that we just bought two weeks ago, and so far neither of us has had a chance to ride due to work schedules, the holiday, and now the weather...when we finally do get a chance to ride we're heading to Harbison State Park which has the best trails in the Columbia, SC area.

Bikes sure have come a loooong way since I rode last, let me tell you! VERY excited about getting back into it!

New member from Wisconsin Milwaukee area

Hello all, I'm a 34 year old male From the Milwaukee area. I've been riding actively since 1998. My favorite sport was/is adventure racing however it seems that they are disappearing.

I consider myself an intermediate rider and love technical trails and cross country.

As far as bikes, I have a Specialize Stump Jumper Comp, and a Stump jumper FSR Pro. I don't think i'll every ride something different, I love them.

The past couple years I've taken a break for family reasons, but I'm looking to get back into the swing of things and looking for a partner to ride with in Wisconsin as well travel to other states in search of more trails.

Since Adventure racing appears to be disappearing I've had an interest in the extreme obstacle courses. Even though it has not to do with mountain biking it's still extreme and looking for people to do that with as well. I'm also a kayaker and camper/backpacker. My profession is Law Enforcement and Loss Prevention (yes, I have two jobs)

Hello. I am a newbie. I'm 33 from Kingston, NY I just bought a rode once genesis 29 from a guy at my job for $50. I am fat and outta shape and plan to use this to get back in shape. When I was a kid I raced bmx then switched to motocross. Have broken my back in 4 places my sternum in half had a knee and shoulder replacement. Hence the reason for my plumpness. Lol not an excuse I know. But I have always been interested in mountain biking through the woods which is my favorite place to be..So having said that hello.. I did some research on the bike I know it's not the best but the price is good and I plan to put better parts on it as the old one break. I am 6'2 and 260lbs. Well I think that's everything.

    Hello ya'll

I live in NorCal, love riding my bike. Rode many miles atop my elf pro as a youth and have now found XC I mainly ride Sonoma County but venture into Marin on occasion. I ride a Niner RDO, Kona Tanuki and OCR C2 for those frigid road rides on crisp winter days. I look forward to plundering the vaults of this seemingly endless supply of great humor, pics and troubleshooting greatness. I will reciprocate if I have knowledge of what's the haps... Take care, and Pedal Damn It !

    Newbie intro

Hi my name is Don and I live in Central Florida. I mainly ride Road Bikes, Townies and sometimes Cyclocross but am new to Mountain bikes.

I have about 50 vintage road and Town bikes plus two Cannondale Mountain bikes.

    Cannondale Mountain Bikes:

    1984 w/ 26" front & 24" rear wheelset

    1996 M-500

The 1984 is quite interesting as it was their first year and different wheel sizing (rims are really neat Pro class Series III Super Hard Anondized)

Hi there, my name is Diana, and I reside in beautiful Bragg Creek Alberta, in Kananaskis country. I live next to some of the best XC biking trails in Alberta, Canada.

I am new to biking, since I sustained some injuries to my achilles tendons and cannot hike and do the things I normally used to do. I just started riding mountain bikes this last July. I own a Rocky mountain trailhead, which is not a good bike for out here. It was great on hills, but half killed me on the downhill parts. I used it all summer, and have been looking for a full suspension bike since the fall.

I have found two candidates now, a 2010 Giant Anthem X4 and a Scott Spark Contessa. This is what brought me here, since I am trying to determine which bike is better. I am able to get them for the same price. I have no knowledge of components and all the important things I need to know about a bike. I now see bikes are not a means of transportation and there is so much stuff to read about, and the learning curve is a slow and sharp one.

Thanks for reading, now I am back to reading on the forums

Newbie..lets get these min req. out of the way!

    Hi All,
My current ride is a 03 SantaCruz Superlight with Thompson hardware, XT drive-train and Avid V-Brakes (yes, still running V's). I am American, but reside in the Netherlands. I am an all-mountain rider that enjoys riding very technical trails..chose the SL back in the day because of: Simplicity, ride characteristics (hard-tail with a little cushioning).
    Cheers,
    JAB63

    Greetings from the Netherlands

    Hi,
My name is Andrew and I live in the Netherlands. I ride mostly cross-country on my Trek EX-8.
I maintain a website about mountain biking where I live and I have just completely revamped it to make it look more modern. I cannot post a link in this text as I am new to the forum, but you can see the link in my signature.

Hello, my name is Luis, I'm from Fredericton, NB, Canada. My answers are below...

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? I'm mainly a XC trail rider, and I love tight, technical singletrack, grueling technical climbs and steep technical descents. This summer of 2012 I have been riding single speed XC bikes for the first time ever and am really digging the experience!

3.) How many bikes you own? 4: 1 Brodie Catalyst SS XC, 1 Spot Rocker SS XC w/ Gates Belt Drive; a 1995 Rocky Mountain Blizzard (currently rebuilding) and an old Peugeot roadie I converted to SS.

4.) How long have you been riding? My whole life, but mountain biking since 1992.

5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites): This one and Pinkbike.

New guy here, just getting back into MTB after quite a few years.
I lived in CO for 13 years and was a pretty avid XC and DH rider since the trails are all pretty awesome out there.
I had an older Trek 4900 that I rode when I was in CO but left it out there and have been bikeless for a few years.
So today I just went to my LBS and picked up a '13 Trek Wahoo and I'm pretty confident I got a decent bike for what I intend to do.
Figured I would get in with a forum since that's what I do with all my other interests, anyways, hello!

    1.) Woodstock, GA now
    2.) all mountain/trail riding i guess
    3.) Just the one
    4.) since 2003
5.) No other forums pertaining to MTB, but a Subaru forum and Reef Aquarium forum

Hey everyone, my name is Aaron, I'm from Brisbane, Australia. I've been riding for about 5 years, but have only gotten serious about it in the last 2.5 years. I'm mainly into trail riding with the odd all day xc adventure, or enduro race thrown in. I've had a few bikes now, all 26", I'm currently testing 29ers and having a ball doing it.

Hey guys, happy New Year! I'm Joe and a complete newbie to mountain biking.

    1. From Lake Worth, FL (near West Palm/Ft. Lauderdale). Originally from NYC area, have lived in FL for 14 years now.
    2. Total beginner looking to do local singletrack trails (and get in shape). Was big into road biking in my early teen years but that was 30 years ago!!
    3. Just got my one and only bike, a Diamondback Overdrive 29'er, got a killer deal from Amazon right after Christmas.
    4. A week.
    5. So far this is the only bike related forum I'm a member of.

Have logged about 20 miles in the past week on local streets and some dirt/grass access roads. Hoping to hit Quiet Waters in the next few weeks and get my first taste of real trail riding!

I have a couple of mountain bikes, Jekyll 800, Ross Mt.Whitney, Rodriguez tandem and 1 I need help identifying. All of my riding includes my 17 year old son, I'm lucky he likes hanging out with me. BMXSociety.com is where I spend most of my time.

G'day, i'm michael from australia. I have been on bikes continuously since a kid and have ridden a lot at times and not so much since having kids. This year i have gotten back on a road bike, and have found the benefit to my health enormous. In six months i have gone from a 38" waist to a 36" and i wasn't even trying.

My brother has just started racing mountain bikes and he has talked me into getting back on the dirt - and probably doing a few races with him. I am a bit bewildered by the choice in bikes out there on the market. It was easy 15 years ago when i was last on the dirt - all the bikes were pretty similar. I'm still trying to look thru all the marketing hype and am here currently to try to get some advice on buying a bike and setting it up. I find suspension particularly confusing!

Hello all! Name is Ryan I am originally from Manhasset, LI - took a hiatus from riding for the past 8 years (focused on offroad riding and track racing in cars) - but now that I live in Hoboken, NJ I have gotten my 2001 Specialized P.3 tuned up and brought back to life - love my bike and love to ride!

Forgot to say my -preference now is greenbelts with some jumps thrown in here or there (Hence the P.3 usage) - I am a fairly competent rider.
I own 2 bikes - the main daily rider is my Sepcialized P.3 and I have a Huffy Backwater for those poor weather days but still keep it nice - will be reviving my 1999 Specialized Rockhopper soon for my Fiance!
Been riding since 1990 casually - full blown trails/jumps since 1996

Thanks mate. I have been looking at the local courses my brother wants me to race on, and they are very flat - i am guessing a hardtail is going to be the way to go even for an old bloke like me. I am currently on a carbon road bike, and i have been amazed by the ability of the frame to soak up road chatter - and some of the local roads are absolute goat-tracks. In fact, i often have to ride a bit of dirt. With modern frames with more vertical compliance and bigger wheels, i can see you could do a lot more now on a hardtail. And they are cheaper, simple and light - all of which appeals to me. I wonder if we'll see Trek use something like theroad Domane frame to build a hardtail mountain bike that effectively has the suspension built into the frame.

But i can also see that the trails my brother rides are very technical and steep (they are ski fields in winter). I can already see that i'll end up with two bikes! A XC hardtail and something with more suspension later on for riding with the little brother in the mountains.

My name is Santiago and I am a mountain bike rider from Mexico. I have been riding casually since I was very young. After almost a year of no riding, I decided to upgrade to a new bike. I owned a ´99(ish) Specialized Hard Rock 15', since I had this bike since I was 14, it had already become a bit small for me. Yesterday I decided to buy a new (used) bike that fits me better and has better quality components. Got a VERY good deal with a Cannondale Flash Carbon 29er. I test rode it and it felt like a bike meant for me, maybe too much bike for my skills but the price was very low for my country.
Since I am really excited with the new bike, I decided to join this community which seems nice and friendly, to get more involved in the MTB world and take better care of the bike.
My other passion is cars. I am a rally co-driver in the local championship. I spend a lot of time in car forums.

    Hey, from Houston Texas
and I suppose I'd be a weekend trail rider for now
    just the one bike
I've been riding since I could walk
This, and others for other interests

I bent and cracked the wheel on my other bike last time out, and the suspension was worn out, so I have a Gary Fisher Fat Possum LX that is on the way from Iowa, should be here next week--

Hey all, I live in Kenya but am from NZ originally. I usually ride twice a week with a small crew of MTBers on the local trails. I've been riding since I can remember but real trail riding since 2006. I currently ride a Specialized Crosstrail which I'm constantly upgrading. I'm still adding new components so I'll be asking a few questions and seeking advice down the line. This is really the best bike forum that I trust and read regularly. However I'm also a member of a yahoo Kenya_MTB forum.

    Hello

    Hi,

I'm in Colorado and have been MTBing for 20+ years. It's been primarily casual trail and road riding for the last several years, but I'm getting back into racing this this season with a couple Xterras and likely a 50 miler and some CX. I'm currently riding a Yeti 575 trail bike, but am looking to add a 29er race bike to the quiver.

    Cheers!

New question here. help!! need to find a 2011 Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper Carbon HT 29er

    hello there ...

i need to find a somewhat reasonably priced Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper Carbon HT 29er 29er Hardtail 18 inch 2011 for a friend.

he lives out of the country and has asked me to find a used bike. i have searched and haven't had much luck - any thoughts on where to look or who to reach out to would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's pretty ridiculous I have to have 5 pots before I can ask a simple question!

    new guy here.
my main passion is military gear and uniforms...as well as firearms and sewing pouches and bags....
    from Albany Oregon
got uh...one working bike currently; but selling it to get a Schwinn Frontier; and 3 frames, two of which are my primary projects and one which was a donor frame.
been lurking on this site as a guest and looking at ideas for my bikepacking rig as well as my commuter project; basically the complete bicycle is a Roadmaster MTN Sport, good frame but very low quality components....and the project frame is a Cycle Pro Oswego frame, using the Suntour XC parts from my women's Lee World Mountain Sport donor bike as well as the Araya wheels from my dad's Bridgestone CB-2 which currently has the straighter SUMO wheels from the Lee World, and another frame is a Huffy Scout All Terrain; that one will become effectively a bikepacking rig/military themed bicycle lol. have started riding around town due to being car-free; and wanted to get to places faster than just walking! also browsed Sheldon Brown's site for lots of info and found lots of info here...though I still got questions and some vintage parts I just got, that I am really wondering about

It is a statement. But it should read posts, my bad. I think it is ridiculous that a person is required to post 5 "replies" before he or she can start a thread. Or maybe you prefer to see

Hi. I'm looking forward to posting more. This is a nice forum and I've been a lurker for a long time.

I am a proud original owner of a 1996 KLEIN Mantra and enjoyed racing for my first time last year!!

I finished in 12th place for cat3 of the Sea Otter Classic, 1st place in cat3 for the Foothill Classic, 4th place for cat3 at Big Sandy with chain trouble, and took home 4 first place awards for the SJC Valley Ranch XC events also in cat3. I moved to cat2 for the Keyesville Classic and finished 9th after having more chain issues.

I am going to race cat2 this year and am looking forward to meeting new riders and getting out just as much as before!

    Regards,
    Huusoku

    Ontario Rider

    Hello,

I had to setup a new account because I can't figure out how to post from my old one. Not sure why. Maybe it was dormant for too long.

    Knolly Podium

I am looking at the new Knolly Podium. I have some parts kicking around to build one up:

    Talas 180
    Havocs
    XT kit

I am also looking at the Ellsworth Method. 7" travel vs 8.5 for the knolly. Lighter and better for climbing. But it may be too close to my Nomad.

    Any thoughts?

Hi Im Dan, i don't write a incredible and perfect english, I speak mostly french and always try to translate everything words by words and that's not the best thing to do haha.

Im from canada, im new into mountain bike, recently bought a used ORYX hardtail, made my first mistake there by choosing a too large frame for me, and now im on this forum to ask questions about bike pieces, what's fits together and what's not to build a bike out of used pieces!

Now i'll try to find somewhere to reply my 5 posts with anything really good to say (due to my ''non-experience'') and not writing useless things...

I don't understand what is the deal with this obligated path of ''5 replys before starting a thread'' but i have a couple of years experiences in forums like welding forums, guitars forums, music forums, cars forums, engineers forums, and never saw this rule before haha

69er to 97.5er? or b9er? Is this where you post stuff?

I am new to this forum stuff, but I have alot of questions and this seems like the lace to start.
I have a Trek 69er HT and was wondering if I fit a 650B/27.5 on the rear should I go from a 100mm fork to a 120mm fork as well. I mean it only makes sense to me. .... putting on the 27.5 will raise the rear of bike .75" right? So, going from 100mm to 120mm would raise front .78" to match and not mess with steering tube angle right?
1988 black kmart bike--threw in garbage...
    1995 Cannondale super V 900 comp --- sold
2004 Litespeed niota clr with XT everything --- sold last year
Now... I bought 2009 Trek 69er hardtail and am so confuzed with this tire bull....
I wanna run a 1x9 and rip around locally and all...
    any feedack would be cool

Greetings to all. New to the forum.

1.) Where you are from? Miramar Fl.
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? beginner 29er rider
3.) How many bikes you own? 1
4.) How long have you been riding? Rode for 10 years all road took a break for 20 trying the MT side of the house
5.) What forums do you frequent most? I visit many Sportbike related forums, my first true love is sportbikes and Ducati's. I run a region site Floridasportbikers.us.

a couple of buddies who ride sportbikes turned me on to MTB's and I figured I would jump right on in and give it a try. I purchased what I figured is an entry level bike, a 2013 Cannondale Trail SL 29ER 2 to start. Great forum!
