Checking in but not really a newbie. I've been on the site for a couple years, just haven't posted much.

From Sammamish, WA very close to Soaring Eagle trails and a mile or so from Duthie Hill.

I am cross country/all mountain and road biker. I just tried Whistler on a rented DH bike and had a blast but it's a 5 hour drive.

I own a 2006 Ellsworth Epiphany but just bought a Ibis Mojo SL frame and components and in the process of building my dream bike. I also own a Cannondale road bike.

I've been riding since I was a kid so 40+ years. I split my head open when I was 12 trying to ride down and then up a deep ravine and didn't quite make it. Fell and hit my head on a rock. It didn't hurt much and I thought I was cool with blood streaming down my face. Took a few stitches and I was fine.

Since I have been buying components for my new bike, I've been reading the Ibis and gear forums.

1.) Where you are from? Saint John, IN
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Beginner more or less.
3.) How many bikes you own? Just one.
4.) How long have you been riding? Grew up on bikes, got into long road rides and some racing in my teens. Then I got into things with engines (dirt bikes, mud racing, rock crawling) for 30 years. Now I'm getting back into riding for enjoyment and exercise.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? Just getting started here.

Just bought an old Schwinn Sierra MOS and am in the process of planning some maintenance and upgrades, so I hope to learn some of the basics of wrenching on MTB's. I'm no stranger to wrenching, just haven't done much of it on bicycles.

Novice level XC rider. My MTB is a "side job", and something I ride for fun. I'm not a big technical rider at all. Okay, I'll be honest...I'm sort of an overly cautious individual.

New rider from DFW, TX area saying hey. I'm definitely a beginner. The girlfriend and i just ordered an rz120 and a lexi120 for our first bikes. I've rented a few times and rode with friends so far, pretty darn addicting. I've been sponging information from here and the DORBA forums for the past three to four weeks. I can't tell you guys how much i appreciate all the information for beginners on this site!

Hi. New guy checking in. I'm Jeff

    I'm from Omaha, Nebraska

Started riding seriously about 4 years ago. Started with road, have branched out to trails, a little singletrack.

besides riding, I seem to have a sickness for buying/selling/experimenting with bikes.

    My stable right now:

2011 Trek Sawyer - just got it, totally stoked about it, need to find some time to actually ride it
2010 Motobecane Fantom 29 Pro - Nice bike, especially for the money, but probably for sale
2010 Cannondale Cyclocross 5 - the swiss army knife of bikes, especially with a second set of wheels and road tires, but I already have specific bikes for every purpose. Poor thing has only been ridden once this year - might also be for sale.
1995 Trek 8700 - rigid fork, hardtail carbon mountain bike - this thing is a blast. Got it 2 years ago, with under 1,000 miles on it.
2010 Cannondale CAAD 9 - The last great made-in-America aluminum road frame
2011 Scott CR1 Team - my plastic road bike.
seven Axiom SG - Custom titanium - my "forever" bike.

Hey everyone. Longtime reader, but new as a member.
    My name is Jason.
    I'm in Woodstock, Ontario.
I rode everywhere when I was young, been off bikes for 16 years, started up a couple of years ago. Year-round commuter.
    I love singletrack.
    I hate derailleurs.
I have dreams that far outpace my bank account.
In the meanwhile, I pedal my commuterized hardtail mtb wherever I can, including places full fenders and K-rads should never go

    Hi from NH

Just got in to the sport. Bought 2 complete bikes based on the reviews I found here.

Had to overhaul one of them, but it was a good learning expierience.

I sold my rock crawler and now I'm in the process of switching into MTBing.

    Wish me luck.

    New guy

    Whats up everyone!?

    Ryan (rdubbs)

1.) I am from the Empire State (NY) I currently live in White Plains which is a city in Westchester County about 25 mi North of Manhattan. I am likely going to be re-locating to Stamford CT which is in Fairfield County by the end of September.

2.) At the moment, I am not a rider. In my teens I was an everyday rider and enjoyed any trails that I could find. I was always partial to All Mountain riding.

3.) See above. Got on the forum to research and talk to some like minded folks about what bike might be a good fit for someone getting back into the sport. The last bike I owned was a Cannondale Super V Raven...many years ago!

4.) Rode hard from age 12-18 and have since been looking for the right time to get back into the sport. Looks like that time is now!

5.) I have worked in the motorsports industry for the last 4 years so most of my posting is on racing/karting sites.

*Specifically, I am looking for tips on what type of bike I should be looking into purchasing. I have accepted that I will likely have to go used to get something capable of the performance I am seeking. I am 6'1 and 220lbs strong as an ox and have very good endurance...please help!

It really depends on whether you are into outdoor or indoor karting but here are two good ones to check out.

I cant post links yet but try these
    ekartingnews.com
    indoorkartingnews.com

    My facility is
    gpny.com

If youre just getting into the sport, start with indoor..its turn-key and wont cost you a fortune

    Awesome thanks!

A local (outdoor) karting club has 'arrive and drive' so I'll likely do that next year then maybe buy a kart and run the points series the year after. I haven't raced in about 8 years, but I really did enjoy it.

    Closet Mountain Biker

Hi, my name is Chris. I'm not addicted to cycling, climbing, or mountaineering, or hiking or any other outdoor activity. No really, I'm not.

    Here goes:

1.) Where I am from? Originally Stanton, KY but these days I ramble back and forth between home in Arvada, CO and work in Golden
2.) What kind of rider do I consider myself? Bicycle commuter and longsuffering adventurer on two wheels. I like long rides on roads or dirt.
3.) How many bikes I own? A few and looking for more.
4.) How long have I been riding? 30 years. Well, not the WHOLE time.
    5.) What forums do I frequent most? summitpost.com, mountainproject.com

My family is car-lite. We have one car so I ride to and from work every day. I have a 1994 Cannondale M300 that I converted to a dropbar Xtracycle. It's a great touring bike. I dabbled in MTBing since I bought the Cannondale back in 1995 from a friend, but I've never really been serious about it. The bike has always been just a way for me to get where I want to go.

Last fall my father-in-law gave me his '09 Specialized Hardrock as an early Xmas gift so he could get himself a new bike. Since then I've dabble a little more around the foothills of the Front Range. And then disaster struck...my wife and I volunteered for the Leadville 100 this summer and now I am possessed. I MUST ride in Leadville next year. I'm on the hunt for a suitable bike and the "training" has begun.

I've realized I was always a mountain biker at heart and so now I am embracing my true identity and preparing to drive my wife crazy with this new obsession.

So far my favorite trail(s) are: Strawberry Jack, Buffalo Creek (singletrack) and the Medicine Bow Trail in southern Wyoming (rail trail).

Hey! My name's Nielsen. I'm a US Marine and I reside in Pacific Grove,CA. I have made my decision to start riding, but there is a problem I dont have a bike yet. This is because I dont know that much about what type of bike should I get. I practice bodybuilding so I'm kind off big. I'm 6'0" and I weight 205 pounds. Im very interested in buying either a 29er or a regular mountain bike. Both with front suspension. Now, what types of bike would you guys recommend? My starting budget is $600.00. Whaddaya think?

    Here's my basic info:
    1) I'm from Puerto Rico
    2) Obviously I'm a beginner in this sport.
    3) Bikes? None (YET)
    4) how long? ....
5)What forums do I frcuent the most? Bodybuilding, Crossfit, General Fitness

I'm from Miami, FL. Was born in D.C. but moved here at 3 months of age so I consider myself a native. A rare and dying breed.
I raced BMX all thru my youth. Then spent the last 15 years traveling and surfing. A friend got into mtb about a year ago and I hit the local trails with him and it has all come back. Since the waves really suck here I find myself riding almost everyday. I really like to hit the 4 trails in the south florida area. I'm pretty impressed with how challenging the can be for such a flat area of the country.
I don't really like to road ride but have been putting a good 20 miles to the beach and back home a few days a week to build up some stamina.
As of right now I went the old mans route and bought a Specialized Rockhopper 29er.
Great bike and trucks over the root and cruises uphill nicely. I'm old school and love having a hardtail but looking to save up and get a full suspension though as my back deserves it after years of abuse.
I visit mostly fishing forums so as of right now this is my only mtb forum. I've visited here a few times as almost every question you google about mtb this site comes up so why not join.

Had a big ramp in the backyard as a kid and got the jumping itch back so may be building a small 3 footer to have some fun and hopefully not break anything.
Also dying to do a trip up north(hopefully Snowshoe) for some mountains in the next month. Not much downhill terrain in my zone.

Hope too see some of you guys on the trails!

Howdy everyone. My name is Brett, I'm currently in Southern Oregon, loving any trail I can get my bike on. I guess I am a weekend warrior, because during the workweek I mostly just plan the next outing. I am currently riding a Specialized P3 circa 2002 hardtail, but saving up to upgrade to something with a little more freedom.
Favorite local trail by far has to be the Wagner Gap run. 10.5 miles of mostly singletrack, technical love!! Of course biking down the side of Mt. Ashland (the local ski resort) can be fun too. Been biking since early 1998. Had to take a minor break in 05 when I had a bad fall, but I'm back in the action now!

    New to MTB

I am new to MTB and I have two hardtail bikes. I have really ramped up my riding lately and wondered if anybody could provide me with advice on what bike to buy next? I'm looking at dual suspension bikes and I have taken an interest in the Santa Cruz Heckler. I'm 6'2" and weigh 185. I live in Virginia and ride single track easy trails right not but want something that gives me versatility down the road. Any suggestions?

    O.G. newbie

Hello all. My name is Joe and I'm in central california. I started riding in '94 and got back into this two months ago. I still ride my '95 Cannondale M400 and am working to get back into shape to ride trails in the S.F. east bay. My favorite trail is the Morgan Territory loop north of Livermore. Found the site while searching for biking gear and I know it will be a great resource for keeping my ”vintage” bike going.

    Howdy all.

1.) Where you are from? Red Bluff - Northern California, close the the Oregon border ;-)
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? Old and old school, out of shape weekend mountain bike warrior. Currently ride about 85% of my weekend treks, walk the other 15%. Looking to improve that ratio!
Just LOVE getting on remote/rugged trails away from the rat race so I can focus on the "Big Picture" Also am into geocaching. Currently riding a 29er geary and am looking to go single speed hardtail.
3.) How many bikes you own? 2 29ers, one full suspension one hardtail.
4.) How long have you been riding? Been riding forever, started off with BMX when younger then shifted to mountain bikes. About the last 5 years I just started getting into mountain biking, anything but dedicated or extreme, not that I dont want to be.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? Been a lurking visitor on this site for about 5 years.

    Cheers

    Hello All-

    1. I am from NJ, in the NYC sub-urbs.
    2. I am an intermediate rider. I have a family with an 8 year old expert BMX racer who is stretching his legs and keeping me on the trails longer going faster than I am comfortable going right now.
    3. I have an IF. He is riding a Specialized, a custom BMX cruiser and a Redline Flight JR.
    4. I started riding around 1990, took the past 6 years off.
    5. I belong to mtbnj, vintagebmx and njbmxracing

Hi all, this is my first post here! My name is Brandon, I'm from the high desert of southern CA, hopefully moving to the Santa Clarita area soon. Im a total beginner at mountain biking. I'm 27 years old and the last time I owned a bike I was probably 10 or 12 years old and it was a generic single speed (huffy maybe?). Just a few days ago I acquired my first real mt bike, a K2 zed 3.0, I'm pretty excited to get it on the trails but it needs a few things first before it's rideable. I'm gonna try and get some pictures of it soon. Hope to spend some quality time here learning the sport!

    1.) Where you are from?
--> Hey, Im Kyle from New Jersey (Work in North Jersey, Live in South Jersey)
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
    --> All mtn/trail rider, 29er
3.) How many bikes you own?
    --> 2 Jamis's 29ers (Exile I and Exile II)
4.) How long have you been riding?
--> BMX for 5 years, then got away from bikes for another 5 and now getting back into mtn biking

Im just getting back into riding, been mostly sticking to ATVs and Dirt bikes but NJ law enforcement doesnt let much fun happen on off-road motor vehicles anymore. With my BMX background and the new technology of mtn bikes I was pretty quickly sold on getting back into the sport. With working only 20 mins away from Ringwood State Park, I can really put my new bikes to the test and have some great fun in the process! Always looking for people to ride with, as myself and cousin just purchased bikes this week and have put 40 miles of trail riding on them in 4 days
