1.) Where you are from? Austin, Tx
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? These days? Weekend Warrior at best.
3.) How many bikes you own? Bikes or parts? lol. Fully assembled, 2. A '95 Fisher Rangitoto and a Giant Rincon I bought for my wife. There's also a gutted Cignal Shenango in the tool shed that I basically rode the wheels off of in the 90's.
4.) How long have you been riding? 20+ years.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? The kind with guns.

Been riding my '95 Fisher Rangitoto now for 15 years. Still love that bike and it still turns heads at the bike shop. However, it's time to move up to something that falls in line with how I prefer to ride these days, i.e. pavement or dirt path. Have a bike picked out, but need some opinions and have to knock out the 5 post minumum first... so here I am.

    Hi All,
I was drawn to this site while researching lighting systems. I was grateful for all the info I collected and the work done to post reviews and screen shots of the various equipment.
I am a senior citizen getting back into riding again for fitness and de-stressing. I discovered mountain bikes in 1984, and immediately had to have one. I was blown away by the places I could go and terrain the bike could negotiate. I still love the feeling of freedom when I hop on the bike and tackle a new trail.
    Keep riding my friends,

    2. All mountain/XC. In the tri state area I take what I can get. I consider myself an intermediate rider.
    3. 2007 Kona dawg. 2010 Marin alcatraz. 2008 Jamis Komodo (sons bike). I also have two of my first mountain bikes a GT Timberline and a Marin Rocky ridge.

Getting back into the sport/hobby after taking some time off. Starting a family and all the things that go along it got me away from biking. Now I see it as a way of spending some more time with my son and getting in better shape than I am now.

    1) Texas
    2) I'd say beginner and trail rider. Maybe XC racer at some point.
    3) My one bike is my Specialized Rockhopper.
    4) I've been riding seriously now for about 8 months.
    5) Here I've looked at Beginner, General, Passion, Specialized and XC racing.

I run and bike. I run more than I bike though I'm probably better at biking. I might be making a move to more biking though. It's less monotonous on the trails and I get to cover more ground (I learned the hard way the marathon isn't the best way to cover a lot of ground). Just thought I'd say hi.

Wow! Lots of stuff going on in here!

    I'm Jeff from Eastern CT
Getting back into MtBiking after a 12 year bender...Err... hiatus. Use to ride quite a bit back in the early to mid 90's.
So that would make me a reborn wknd warrior!
Ive got 3 bikes, and old 92 GT converted to a 7 spd Rat Bike/cruiser for the beach. An old proFlex dual sus and my trusty 95 Trek 7000. Which I have also brought out of retirement.

I have really gotten bit by this bug again and am ready to upgrade to a more modern bike. I will be looking in the $1000.00 range for a decent hardtail. I will never part with my 7000, What a great bike she has been.

Anyway, It seems I have a lot of reading to do here as so many things have changed!

Where did all the purple anodizing go...

    Hello everybody!

1.) Where you are from? Belgium (province of Limburg)
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself? There's not too many trails out here, which means i have to ride my hardtail on paved surfaces for many miles before encountering anything that can't be ridden on a race bike.
3.) How many bikes you own? 2
A 2008 Specialized Stumpjumper Comp, and a 'Diamant' (which was a Belgian brand) alu race bike which is about 9 years old.
4.) How long have you been riding? about 4 years now
5.) What forums do you frequent most? local mtb forum, some car forums

I consider myself to be living in one of the worst possible countries if you're a mtb enthousiast, but it's just the way it is, so i'm trying to make the best of it. I hope this forum will broaden my view of biking possibilities all around the world, as i'm not planning on staying here anyway (i'm still young, and not made for being buried in the same town i was born in).

    Hello all,

    1. I am from Bali, Indonesia
    2. Beginner rider (last time I rode regularly was decades ago)
    3. 3 bikes, all Dahon
    4. A few weeks
    5. None

The 5 post rule is an odd one..... I am a beginner, I have a beginner question to post and I can't even post my beginner question without making a reply to another thread!

Did a lot of ridding years back(both road and Mtn), switched over to the 'dark side' ( trail running and road)
miss the ridding...so I built my ride and now can roll the trails I've been running and cover many more miles...

    Intro

Funny, I thought i joined mtbr years ago........

OK, new member here from Hopkinton MA, right down the street from Viet Nam, one of the more popular riding places in greater Boston.
Been riding since '89 when I bought a Bridgestone MB-3. In the early 90's when I was around 40, I did an occasional race for fun in Vet Sport, and ended up getting a Fat Chance Buck Shaver. Right after I got the Fat, went on a trip to Crested Butte - great trip. Next bike was a Santa Cruz Superlight ~'93 and am still riding it. I still have all the bikes. The Bridgestone has been delegated to winter use with fenders and slicks. The Fat was just stripped and is going to get all new stuff this winter. I've also got an older Merlin Ti frame I pick up used - not sure what I'm going to do with it.....

All my riding is basic cross-country riding on classic New England trails.

For road bikes, got a '97 Merlin Road frame I bought new and was refit with Campy Chorus 3 years ago. Also, just bought a used Independent Fabrications 'cross bike intended for winter use and dirt road riding. I want to do the D2R2 ride next year on it.

I don't get in as much mt biking as I used to, mostly on the road now. Can't do everything....

    Catch you around,
    Murph

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
    Intermediate

Have had many over the years since I can remember. Started with a Huffy when I was very young,

for a race bike. Last mountain bike was a late 90's, early 00's GT Saddleback. Currently building a
1x9 29er hardtail (Performance Access frame with mid-level SRAM drivetrain, RaceFace cranks,
    Manitou forks, etc.)

Since I can remember, but always on and off. I honestly believe that
    will change now

    Newbie Checking In

Hello, let me give tell you about my biking experience.
I have one bike right now, but i used to own a diamondback viper x that i grew out of.
[I would stunt on it all afternoon after school with friends, great fun. I gave it to a neighborhood kid so he could do the same. I enjoy bmx but riding a bmx around college campus is not ideal. My tastes have changed to mountain biking.]

My current bike I bought for 15 dollars at a thrift store. This bike is red, probably from the late 90s, (maybe a surviving walmart bike)... I ride it anyway. Not sure who it was made by as the decals have started to peel and are not readable. It squeaks a little....

Since i was a bmx guy, i come here to learn about mountain biking. So that i can gain knowledge and purchase a bike that is more practical for my new needs.
    Thanks for reading.
(I want to use one of these )

I'm writing from the southeastern tip of Simi Valley, California formally known as Box Canyon. I have two bikes, a FS and HT and have been riding, on and off, since 1987. I enjoy it now more than ever. I would consider myself an intermediate rider and spend about 6 hours a week on the trail. I love reading this forum and especially these threads: Passion, All Mountain, Night Riding, Weight Weenies, and Where to Buy Stuff.

    Newbie

I am Dave and live near Colorado Springs. At 47 years old and hating running I had to get a bike with lots of gears to get me up and down the 6% grade valley I live in. I bought a Giant Revel 1 to get started and haven't been riding for 10yrs. I found very quickly that I love riding this bike and feel fortunate to live in a place that I can leave my driveway and be challenged and can also go to the many parks in the area for a change of pace.

My name's Cole, 19, and just started mountain biking on some local horse trails, eventually i'll take a step forward to something more challenging. I'm out of shape (5'5" and 250lbs), so i get worn out pretty easily and im sure my bike doesnt like taking the abuse of my weight.

    1.) Graham, Wa., U.S.
2.) Flat out beginner, however when it comes to dirtbikes i have plenty of experience on the trails (and no im not the kind of rider who tears the trails up, i just like navigating technical trails)
    3.) Just one Raleigh Talus 3.0 2011
4.) Bmx and rigid frames for about 14 years (basically when i learned how to ride), on roads and paved trails. HT mountain bike for about 5 months
5.) This is the only forum i visit (so far)

    1.) Where you are from?
all over, but now live in Anchorage, AK

2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
Commuter, weekend warrior, just starting to get into winter riding

3.) How many bikes you own?
one, Specialized Rockhopper, just threw some studs on it but found thats not helping me too much in the snow so looking at maybe buying a fatbike for snow riding sometime soon

4.) How long have you been riding?
As long as I can remember, but have never been too serious about it

5.) What forums do you frequent most?
mostly homebrew forums, but starting to check out winter cycling and fatbike forums, but I don't know a whole lot about components so it is a bit puzzling.

'nother n00b here. I'll get everyone beer and bacon sammiches in a minute but I thought I'd drop in and introduce myself. I split my time on two wheels between motorcycling and bicycling. My motorcycling is strictly asphalt but I pedal over whatever comes my way. Been bicycling pretty much ever since I could walk (since the mid 80s). Still suck at DH mountain biking but I don't go enough to get really good at it and prefer XC anyway. I used to ride rigid framed MTBs and finally last year picked up a GF Pirahna which is the nicest MTB I've ever owned. Can't get the fraking brakes to shut up though. Cleaned the hell out of everything several times and no joy...just keeps howling. Anyway, guess I gotta up my post count before I can start asking questions on the brake forum LOL

Own one bike: Specialized Hardrock Sport (06-07 I think)
I have been riding for two weeks, just about everyday and I haven't stopped yet. Well, just to sleep and eat.
This is my second forum as of today; just joined today.

Tried to post a link to my first post, with some more details and questions, but I guess I need 8 more posts for that. So if you care to search, it's under Specialized, and "post your hardrock pics here" - post number 565 - or last page as of today. Thanks!

Oh yeah, or you can click on my name and find more posts by me.

Looking forward to learning a lot!

    Saying hello

Hi, my name is John, I live in Adair Village, OR. I don't have much for skill but that doesn't change how i feel about mountain biking, there's just nothing like it. I currently own two bikes, a 2009 kona coilair which is my main bike and a 2005 kona coiler dee-lux, which i am in the process of rebuilding. I've been riding bikes as long as i can remember but only got into mountain biking in 2005.

    1.) Where you are from?
    Mill Valley, CA
2.) What kind of rider do you consider yourself?
Returning to mountain biking after nearly 15 year hiatus. Was a tri geek for several years before hurting my back 2 years ago. Have found mountain biking, even with all the climbing, to be much better on my back than sitting in the aero position for a few hours
Am really a beginner all over again. Enjoy steep climbs of fire roads plus some fun non-technical descents. Want to re-acclimate myself with being off-road before trying some of the more technical parts but my bike handling skills are pretty crap . . . and my engine ain't what it used to be so I need to rebuild that leg strength!
3.) How many bikes you own?
    * Specialized Camber Carbon Expert 29er
    * Cervelo P2SL
4.) How long have you been riding?
    * Bought my first mountain bike (Cannondale Super-V900) in 1995 and rode trails around Palm Springs, CA and Big Bear, CA for 3 years on that before being away from bikes for a few years and then getting into tris in 2001.
5.) What forums do you frequent most? (either here or on other sites)
    * MTBR
    * used to spend a lot of time on slowtwitch.com

    Adcance Cyclery: Syracuse, NY

    Hi all....

Im Chris of Advance Cyclery of Syracuse, NY
Advance Cyclery has been open since 1973 and in our new building since 1988.
We mainly carry Specailized with a few other brands as fillers at the moment.
Im new to MTBR and hope to use it to network and share info.

The latest info is about a NEW INDOOR BIKE PARK. Yes, a indoor bike park going up in the Syracuse, NY area (Thompson rd). CranX Indoor Bike Park (CranX.com). To get an idea of what the park will be like check out Rays bike park. Also Dave Mirra is helping out his home town by helping put in the foam pit and BMX street section. Advance Cyclery will also be helping out with vending, bike supplies, and rentals. I hope everyone gets a chance to check it out if your around the area!

    Thanks all,
    Chris of Advance Cyclery.

New to the site, even though I've been checking it out for years...
Live in Sydney, so a lot of the riding I do tends to be urban, or commuting unfortunately, Although a definite XC, Weight Weenie at heart (It finally dawned on me, when I was weighing derailleurs, ha ha), Which doesn't really make that much sense considering I'm a 6'3 and 110kgs rugby player... Love a bit of AM type stuff too... Love a good Technical descent picking lines,Steep and Rocky!
    Current Bikes,
    1. Old School Avanti Comp Pro, Scandium with XTR (m950), although I run a Truvatvi Stylo Team crank as they were half the price and a whole lot better! Sids, DT Hugi 240 and Adventure Components, on Mavic 517s - Which reminds me if anyone has a Yellow DT swiss 240 Front hub, let me know! I want one!!!!
    2. Even older Cr-mo, with 8 speed XT! Love this bike, not an ounce of movement in derailleur pivots and the bike is 13 years old, so no reason to upgrade anything
    3. Cr-mo, Single speed road bike
    4. Surly Instigator Project build, with a long way to go! Just got a Mavic EX729 Laced onto Chris King Iso with DT aplines, all in Black! Awesome.! Will be a bunch of CK, Hope brakes, etc etc Planning on 9 speed

    Earning and turning

I'm from Utah. I'm an ex xc racer, now weekend warrior. I have two built up hard tails and an in progress full suspension 29er. I've been riding for 15 years.

With all that said I need some help navigating this forum. What thread should I look under to ask some questions about frame building. Specifically rear shocks.

Thanks, this place has some really good information.

Finally checking in for the first time!

Mark from Puyallup, WA. Currently riding my new carbon Tallboy! Had to go shopping for a new bike when my 10 year old Jekyll got ripped Oh well, it led to one fantastic new ride! I've been MTB and road riding since early 80's, BMX since I was a child. I consider myself a XC/all-mtn. rider mostly/weekend warrior to be honest (although I'd like to be more full-time). Have done a bit of racing/mostly on the multisport end of that scene. I currently own 5 bikes. As for forums, I've been spending most of my time on the 29er forum lately. Thanks MTBR for hosting such a useful sight!
