    Mystery bike ID hel needed

    Can anyone help me figure out what this bike?

    It looks like a custum build.....?

    The rear end is likely an AMP. The whole frame may be, too, though many small builders used the AMP rear.

    Are we sure this isn't a Wal-Goose frame? Didn't some of the dept. store bikes come with the Amp-style suspension?

    The serial #s are on the head tube. That's weird in its own right.

    I say AMP for the back too.

    I am with the AMP chorus, but I didn't know they ever made 1 1/8 headsets frames which I thought was the Mega-Air. When did AMP stop making bikes, I though it was before the 1 1/8 headset "relolution?"

    And the Mega-Air . . . light and one of the first to push 32mm. The chrome stantions wore quickly for me.

    whatever it is, it looks like it hasn't been used in awhile (maybe a barn find), or at least not well taken care of. rusty vee post bolts and pad hardware, rusty rear QR, rusty hardware on craptastic plastic pedals.

    The way it's built suggests it was a quality build at one time, though. I haven't seen canti posts that were bolted on before. usually they're welded on. I'd say the curved top tube also suggests a better builder. This thing can't be newer than 2000, I'd say, and curved aluminum tubes were not common back then because it's not easy to do that.

    What is odd to me is the v. low level rusty parts such as the brakes. The bolt on cable clips on the downtube are odd too. The rims look really cheap. Is that a Noleen shock on the rear? I still say Wal-Amp...I can feel it flexing through the picture

    that was the mass produced bike with this suspension design I was thinking of but could not recall the name. I've never seen one in person so I'm not sure if any of the small details match.

    Yeah you guys are right it's not. My brain can usually pick these old rides out. There were a number of knock offs with this basic frame design but for some reason they have escaped my memory. Time for some Ginkgo. It most definitely is a 1998-1999' time frame.

    I would hold off until you figure out what you got. Although the components scream a good brand. The Noleen fork was concidered a good fork. They never made it main stream. Some companies used them to appear more high end than the norm. Most of the parts have been upgraded from the year of the frame.

    Ok, sorry, I didn't look close enough to notice it actually says AMP on the rear dropout..so my Wal-Amp comments are off..disregard..looks like a B3 to me.

    Dude...that is it or damn close. This also explains why it needed canti mounts clamped to the seat stays.

    Still not it, check out the gussets at the end of the toptube of the OP's. It is most definitely an AMP suspension design. But during this time frame there were several companies using that design.

    Yeah that post was in reference to the the photo of the AMP. Your frame is definitely not an AMP but one of the several companies that used that suspension design. The mystery rolls on.
    Edit: Unless your frame is an AMP and some gussets were custom welded on to it. Just a thought, because those AMP frames were very prone to cracking.

    Oh man, I don't think so...the Horst Link is the basis for some of the designs still in use! The thing I remember about them is the flexiness of the rear end.

    it looks like the 2000 B3 had the right curved TT and seat tube gusset, but can't tell about the HT gusset.

    I don't think we'll find anything that looks right with the clamp on brake post mounts, because AMP was playing around with its 3 bolt disc brake

    this one is about the most similar pic I have found, but I don't know what year it was.

    sifting through google images, I can't find any verified 2000 models of this bike aside from the tiny mtbr thumbnail. A lot of other manufacturers who used this frame design (Mongoose, Litespeed) used square tubing in the rear triangle, presumably to reduce the flexiness. they also ran the rear derailleur cable down the seatstay.

    The bikepedia page for that bike shows a picture that looks very similar to me, though I'm not sure if the pic is actually of the B-3 Laguna Classic

    I wouldn't hold Bikepedia as being a bike Bible as some think. I found 3 mistakes on a description of one bike I recently looked up. If they can make 3 mistakes on one bike I can just imagine how many mistakes there are amongst thousands of bikes.
