    My top ten Shimano inventions

Japan companies and the Japaneses are incredible inventors.

They have become some of the most innovative industrial bases in existence, being capable at the same time to interpret a design, improve it and then make money out of it quickly.

This might be the case of Shimano, but saying that they only refine but not conceive is really to disregard the truth.

    Here it goes my list.

    10. Rapidfire Plus.
    9. V-brake.
    8. Super SLR (Shimano Linear Response).
    7. Hyperglide.
    6. Compressionless gear housing
    5. SPD.
    4. S.T.I.
    3. Di2.
    2. Shimano Index Shifting (SIS).
    1. Freehub.

A detailed explanation can be found here in my blog:

I know, I've some seen Paul prototypes among others... but the reality is what it is.

One of their top ten inventions isn't even a bike related item:

Shimano Chronarch 100B casting reel. Never been anything quite like it before or since (for the money).

Shimano trade marked it, Ben Capron invented it.

Yes! Marinovative Stop Lites and Cheap tricks by Ben Capron. Good call dude!
He was making linear pull brakes long before Shimano copied the idea. Shimano trade marked the name "V brake", but they didn't invent them. Capron never patented his design.

Word of caution: Just because someone or something (in the case of a corporation like Shimano) has a patent or trademark does not mean they invented or originated a design. They simply made it to the patent/trademark office first.

They didn't really invent SPD either ,they took the Look pedal design and made it smaller.

They also have a habit of making items that are unnecessarily proprietary (102 bcd anyone?).

They may not have invented everything, but their R&D and design and ability to produce something that works so well for so many people is what is hard to argue against. Did they invent hollow cranks? No, but they have been the most successful producers for good reasons.

Not entirely sure if you can say that they completely invented anything on that list. Electronic shifting has been a mainstay of highend motorsports for years, they just took the idea and implemented it in the bike realm. I think that Suntour had indexed shifting first. They definitely didnt invent the V-brake although I thought Charlie Cunningham did, stand corrected.

They've definitely refined a lot of products but were not ever really radical in coming out with anything completely groundbreaking.

The point is not whether or not they produce product that work well, it is whether or not they innovated, designed, or invented a certain bicycling technology. Most everything that is on that list does have a design lead previously in the cycling world or in other areas of industry/technology. Shimano makes good stuff, that is true. But what they do far better than manufacture is marketing and making timely business decisions, and beating others to the patent office.

Take the issue of Suntour VS Shimano: Suntour "invented" the superior rear derailleur design, which they had patented. Shimano had to sell an inferior design until that patent ran out. The superior invention credit goes to a company other than Shimano.

At the end of the 70's Shimano made better business decisions than Suntour. They marketed their components over a wider spectrum of bicycle price points as well as charging a per-component price that gave a consumer perception their products were of superior quality. The credit goes to Shimano, not for invention but for better marketing and business sense.

Shimano has innovated, don't get me wrong, but they are not necessarily the golden example of innovation that they are being held up as in this thread.

Ben's marinovative cheap tricks were really cool. I have several sets. It's a travesty that he never made a dime on it.

I think one of the best was the cassettes with the cogs mounted on an alloy spider.
