Looking to get into xc- first time post!

Hey all, I've recently decided to take up a new hobby! I've got some experience from over the years and I'm a freestyle skier actually so I'm coming from a similar background. I live in MD and looking to get into some XC single track riding so I need some helpful advice on a bike. I'm looking for a good HT that I can put some upgrades into but nothing too expensive. I've been scouring craigslist looking for some deals and found a new (but few years old) diamondback response sport for $250. This leaves some room for upgrades so should I pull the trigger or avoid this bike altogether?

Seems like a solid bike to get you into the sport. I would test ride it first before you make any decisions though!

One of these was my first mountain bike. You are going to get lots of opinions on this one. Most will say to get a more expensive bike. I say just get this one. Some people pay this much for a set of pedals. This bike is a bit heavy, but it is tough. I would expect it to stay together while you are learning if you like the sport.

It is not really economical to buy an entry level bike and do lots of upgrades, but some do it and like doing that. You should expect the forks to be a bit bouncy. If you learn to ride challenging trails, you may outgrow this one soon, but only you will know.
