Can anyone recommend a good LBS in the Detroit area?
I live in Windsor, Ontario and all the LBS's here are horrible. I'd be willing to drive 30 min to find a good one. I frequently go out to Troy at the 14 mile and John R to do other shopping but I'm not adverse to driving a bit further to find a good shop.
Hey Jakey, The one bike shop I can recommend is Macomb Schwinn Cycling and fitness on Schoenherr rd. (pronounced shaner) just south of 12 mile in Warren. Their address is : 28411 Schoenherr Rd, Warren, MI 48088. Don't let the "Schwinn" name fool you, in fact I don't think they even sell Schwinns anymore but they just don't want to change the name. The guys in that shop and the mechanic are professional and top notch all the way. Their phone # is 586-756-5400. Are you looking to buy something or have your bike worked on? If you're looking to buy something specific I would call any shop first as Michigan bike shops don't seem to keep much in stock in the way of trick parts.
Another shop I used to live near and had really good service from is Kinetic Systems in Clarkston (up near Pine Knob). They carry alot of parts and higher end bikes and also have a great mechanic.

Bikesport is more of a multisport-triathlon/duathlon shop, but they do sell mtb's as well and are pretty good guys. I bought my Sugar from there back in 2000.
There's another pretty good shop over in Lincoln Park that I've visited a couple times; Al Petri & Sons. There's also a couple good shops in the Canton/Livonia/Western suburbs; D&D Bicycle & Fitness, Town & Country Cyclery, and Planet Cycle. I bought my Cannondale from Planet Cycle back in 1999.
But IMHO, I think the shop with the best word of mouth is Two Wheel Tango (http://www.twowheeltango.com/ ) and they're in Ann Arbor.
All the shops andyA mentioned are great also, I bought my Litespeed roadbike from Bikesport in Dearborn last year and they were great in setting this newbie roadie up but they are heavy on the road bike/triathalon side, Great guys though and their mechanic (can't remeber his name/taller thinner guy) was absolutely amazing to watch when he was setting up my roadbike. Planet cycle is an awesome shop with plenty of mt. bike goodies.
As a former resident of Dearborn Hts, MI, I can also recommend JACK'S (bought my Fuel there, nice people who knew what they were talking 'bout)) and BIKESPORT (had, great, great service there - bought a cassette, got it installed for free, etc...little things, but...the little things mean a lot, sometimes....they were my mechs of choice in the Dearborn area , when it came to something I couldn't or didn't feel like doin' )
As far as D&D, my experience hadn't been the best - pushy salespeople who didn't seem to know a whole lot about what they were selling, but that may have been the individual store (which I think is no longer in operation in Dearborn.....Michigan's 500 miles away from me, anymore, so, ain't sure on the current status of things....) - the bike prices were pretty good, but it doesn't instill customer confidence when one asks about Cane Creek Shocks versus Fox Shox (on rear of bikes), and you're told "I've never heard of Cane Creek" even though they have bikes in the showroom with them....LOL !!! FWIW !!!
