I'm looking for a quicker, longer lasting way to load my hydration pack with ice. The circumference to my pack reservoir is 2" so I'd like to make cylinders of ~1 3/4" x 8" ice cubes. Can anyone come up with a creative way to do this? The easiest thing would be to use long, narrow plastic cups but I don't think there are any that narrow.
Those camelbak elixer or similar containers would make a nice ice cube cylinder.... Ive accumulated several over time as well as the Nuun containers. Not quite 8" Though..
hmm, if you put a PET bottle, like a coke bottle, into boiling water, it will shrink down to a smaller height and diameter. then, if you cut the top of, you could use it for an ice cube mold. the bottle you chose to shrink would need to have a profile that would be easy to get the ice out of.
or, put water into the camelback, and put it into the freezer the night before. blow the water out of the hard plastic fittings.
Very good idea! I'm searching eBay for some and it seems like most are a bit too wide (around 2 1/2" circumference). If that's too big, I'll go with RipRoar's popsicle recommendation
I've thought about this too. However, my resevoir to my hydration pack is kind of a pain to take out of the pack -- it latches down and you need to snake the hose through the shoulder strap. I could put the whole pack in but it's pretty nasty (sweaty and dirty) and would take up a lot of freezer space.
We have a winner. Freezing the bladder also helps in cutting down on stuff growing in your bladder. You still need to clean it regularly though.
Clearly the OP is'nt married. My wife would'nt be to happy with me if I left a bunch of empty ice cube containers in the sink. As I hurry out the door to ride.
Just freeze 1/2 to 2/3 of the bladder, when you want to ride, run some warm water over it to loosen it up and Voila.....I also leave my empties in the freezer to keep them clean...
I found that I could get pretty creative with the vacuum sealer.
The plastic bags can be sealed up any which way. Fill 3/4 with water, prop the sealer up higher and seal without taking out much air.
Place in freezer laying down lengthwise so the expansion won't blow the bag.
Presto .... reusable.
I've done stuff like that, a big flat 'plate' of ice for coolers but fortunately the military MULE camelbak keeps cold water cool even by the end of the ride.
plastic 20 liter bottles. the ones from costco and sam's club are cylindrical. cut off the top and it would work. it would definitely fit in my bladder at least.
or you could get those flavored ice things, eat or dump out the stuff, and fill it back up with water and tie it off.
