how to mount shift-part of shift/brake lever alone?

I am upgrading brakes and brake levers on my Trek 970 from 1992, but I would like to keep the shift lever from the original shift/brake lever setup and mount it directly to the handlebar. I've been told, that such an adapter doesn't exist. I was thinking about an $1 adapter, just a ring and a hole.

Do you where can I find one or least a DIY guide how to make one?

Magura used to make them -- known as STI shift lever adapters/clamps. They've been out of production forever. Maybe check ebay?

Gorilla Billet made them as well. See this thread: Who made thes mounts?

I think those magura & gorilla adapters fit only the m900 (xtr) stuff... regardless, they are very difficult to come by & command high $$$ when they do come up on the auction block.
There are those of us that got creative with hacksaw/dremel to take off the brake lever back when. It was rarely purty, but functional anyway.
