Front derailleur cable clamp screw is stripped

    Hi,

The front derailleur is a Shimano M191. I was adjusting the height of it and when I went to tighten the cable again the screw will tighten just until it gets to the end. It seems to be stripped. Is there any easy solution to fix this?

    thanks,
    Rick

Considering that you asked this question ... Take it to a machine shop, and have them install a Heli-Coil ... It's a special type of threaded insert, and you'll probably spend more for the tooling than most anyone will charge you for the repair.

    ETA:
On second thought ... Just buy another deraileur -

Depending on how it works, put a nut behind it with a longer bolt, drill & tap it with the next larger bolt, drill & tap it with a SAE bolt.
Or it's a $13 derailleur - replace it. One on Ebay right now for 99 cents, 4 days to go.

Yep. Not worth doing anything with. Buy a new derailleur.

Put a nut on the bolt and save the delay of buying a new one.

You mean use the nut on the cable side? I tried putting washers to use as spacers on the head of the bolt side but it still wouldn't tighten all the way.

Take that bolt and throw it away.
Go to your local hardware store and buy a nut and bolt that will fit through the existing bolt hole. The bolt needs to be long enough to reach all the way through the nut.
Make sure you add the tools required to service this nut and bolt combo to your trail tool kit, in case that cable ever slips when you're 20 miles from the trail head. Try to find a metric Allen head bolt if you can.
