    DIY forum

did there used to be a diy forum on here or am i getting it mixed up with the lighting forum? in any event i think it could be cool, lots of riders do little hacks to their bikes that would be neat to see.

I like this idea better than 20 wheel size forums, where people only discuss crap like stems and saddles and handlebars, anyway, and where such various wheel sizes should all be covered by the "Wheels and Tires" forum.

Yes, we need a wrench DIY forum. I would think it could become an excellent resource for those of us who enjoy figuring out the little problems ourselves. It should also include homemade tools as well.

I agree. There doesn't really seem to forum that addresses that. I would like to see a more focused maintenance forum.

Gee...maybe even a 29er specific chain lube forum.

Sounds like a very good idea, also the 29er specific chain lube forum, even I do not own a 29er I want to know everything about their chain lubing secrets.

    Already exists, or at least pretty close to what you seem to be describing;

    Tooltime - Mtbr.com

I should have also noted, that many of the more detailed discussions for maintenance on these forums goes into the subforum for that type of component e.g. Brakes, Wheels, Drivetrain, Shocks & Suspension, etc.

So why do we have all the wheel size forums when "Wheels and Tires" covers them all?

Meh, the name "Tooltime" isn't 100% self-explanatory, but it does seem good enough I suppose within the contraints of 1-2 words to describe a subforum about clever tools and how to use them, plus solutions for odd mechnical issues that don't slot neatly into any of the more defined component categories. Tooltime doesn't seem to get a whole lot of activity currently, but with a few more people posting in there that could change over time.

ah yeah, that's what i was thinking of. still, i think it would be cool for diy mods to our bikes, homemade fenders, custom touches, cable routing, etc.

    I agree - to a degree.

Although it would perhaps be nice to have all of those types of projects grouped into one subforum so that others can quickly reference them, this General forum probably sees a lot more viewers and is probably appreciative of any novel solutions and setups.

Then why did the awesome strap thread get shut down?

    exactly.

some just could not help themselves. Very little of that thread was serious discussion about the Strap itself. It was OC type material.

I was on the verge of buying one and was on the fence with more information needed on it, and bam it was shut down. I bet Back Country Research would have loved it if I had gave in and bought one.

A DIY forum is a great idea and would be a great addition.

FYI ; changes are now pending to the currently named "Tooltime" forum to make it more suitable for this purpose, and hopefully be a landing zone for more of the types of posts a couple of you have described in this thread.

I have frequented Tooltime for quite a while and while it can be good thread (on occasion), it's name doesn't covey what I think many here are seeking. MAINTENANCE, or something with similar verbiage better articulates the intent of the subject matter. I would like to see a thread that more directly and specifically address this topic.

Perhaps like wheel sizes, we could have Handlebar Maintenance, Pedal Maintenance, Seat Post Maintenance, etc...

    Joking.

We need a "Jerry Rigging" sub-forum
All I need are some tasty trails, cool bike, and I'm fine.

^ I think "Jerry Rigging" may have its origins as a derogatory racist expression. The current preferred nomenclature is MacGuyvering, Dude.

I think the 'jerry-rigging' thread should be a sub-forum found in the Duct Tape thread.

You know, on the "Lawyers Talk Law" forum, they have a Jury Rigging thread.

So it got shut down, rather than simply moved into OC?
Sometimes, I question the value of my content.
