    Creaky bike fix

My timberjack developed a pretty good creak on the trails today. I think it's the seat post because I notice it mostly when I'm on the seat pedaling or when I'm on the seat and hit a bump/small root. Can anyone tell me what the fix is for a creaky seatpost? Clean, grease, and re-install?

Yup, start with that (assuming the clamp is properly tightened).

Yep, itís just a process of elimination. If it sounds like the seatpost itís probably the seatpost. That area is a very common area for a creak to develope.

Move the seat a bit and see if it changes the noise.

Saddle rails often creak too, check that.

Will do. Thanks guys. So cleaning the seat post saddle rails and re-installing them with some light grease or something is the way to fix the creaks?

Aye, that's where most of my saddle squeakage comes from. It's either the rails against the seatpost clamp (cure: use a bit of copper grease or anti-fretting compound), or where the rails terminate in the fore/aft plastic mouldings (bodge: squirt a bit of GT85 or silicone spray on the ends of the rails and ride for a few minutes to work it in).
Hose me down till the water runs clear.

If it still creaks at all when you're standing then it's not the saddle or seatpost.

Can't say for sure if I recall it creaking when standing. I just recall the creak being very noisy when I was on the seat pedaling or if I was on the seat and hit some bumps. It didn't even creak all the time when pedaling sitting down. I will say though that the creak got very predictable when the rear wheel hit a bump when I was sitting.

I don't recall hearing it standing and bombing down hills. It was mostly happening on the flatter sections of the trails that are too fast to pedal standing up and not too awful rough.

Noises can be difficult to track down, a friend had a creak that was really hard to find, it turn out that the bolt on derailleur hanger needed some grease.

Well, I cleaned and lightly greased the seat post and saddle rails. Also shot some WD-40 where the rails go into the seat. After a quick spin on the trails at my house today, I didn't hear any creaks. None when sitting or standing. We'll see if it holds up to a much longer ride this weekend.

Put a long 20 miles on the bike today and didn't hear any creaks the whole time. Hopefully next time she gets the creaks again it'll be that easy to fix. Thanks for all the advice guys.
