Chain Stuck Between Cassette and Wheel

    Hey everyone,

I was wondering if the chain getting stuck between their cassette and wheel is a big problem for people. I know that once you set the limit screw properly on the derailleur it should prevent the problem, however it creeps up on me every once in a while (particularly if I adjust my derailleur). Last year, it got me during a race and a good Samaritan on the sidelines happened to have a cassette tool so I could dislodge it and keep racing (although I lost the the use of the 36t cog!).

Also, I don't think I know anyone that keeps the hideous plastic ring that comes with their bike.

Do folks our there run into this problem from time to time?

    Thanks!

I have never had that problem, although I have seen it happen to several people. Seems to happen if the derailluer/shifter isn't properly adjusted, or if people over shift with lower end components.

...and yes, the plastic ring is terrible, but if it seems to happen to you, maybe you should consider leaving it on there. Function over form, sometimes people forget that.

Never happens to me. It might be more likely with a 36 cog since the gap would be larger higher up as the spokes are angling inward (if that makes sense).

But proper tuning of the derailleur is key, and if the chain tends to ride up, it might be alignment of the derailleur pulleys, ie, maybe the cage is slightly bent?

Once your RD is properly adjusted it isn't a problem. If you find the limit won't stay set try a little loctite on the screw.

It can happen even with a properly adjusted RD, a bent derailleur hanger will also cause overshifting.

Maybe so but I've never been to properly adjust a RD if the hanger was bent. Something would always be at least a little off.

And a cracked frame will cause poor handling. And a flat tires add rolling resistance...
Seriously though - With the derailleurs properly adjusted, the chain will go only where it's supposed to go.
Mountain bikers who don't road ride are usually slow.
Roadies who don't mountain bike are usually d***s.
