if there is two small slots on the back side (as if it were a flat head bolt and it now has a hole drilled throught he center) You could try holding it from spining with a narow blade flat head screw driver. Once you get some tension on them they should stop spinning but Iknow that is not always the case.

I just looked up the chain ring nut wrench, that is pretty cool. Looks like it would be pretty easy to make one but at 4 to 5$ you could just buy one and save the hassle

I've never had a problem just holding the backside with my finger tip held tightly against the fastener, until tension/friction takes over.

If you grease the threads you are more likely to be able to get them tight without a chainring bolt wrench.

The chainring bolts could be too long also.

Grease the chainring bolt threads. (EDIT: as J.B. Weld already said while I was entertaining myself in another tab.) It's a good practice anyways.

That way the clamping force becomes high enough to hold the backside against the spider (or middle ring) before rotational friction of tightening the bolt starts turning the backside along.

If this fails, superglue the backside to the spider (or middle ring).

Or just yield and get the tool.
