Budget Full Suspension: Old Used Bike or Crumby New Bike

My '99 Jamis Dakar was stolen today. I've become rather attached to the improved traction of full squishy on tough trails, but I'm not at the level where I can justify spending more than about $500. So my choices are to track down another decent-quality FS bike from late '90s or buy something on Bikes Direct.

So that's the crux of it - has technology improved enough that a new Motobecane 550DS is better than what I can find used for the same price? Not that there's much out there at any age for under $1,000...

That blows, sorry. It depends on what's available in your area. I'd definitely keep my eyes out for a 99 Dakar in your extended area if you know what I mean.

I would look for a used bike over the bike direct at that level. The newer Dakar's (Sport,XC,...) are nice to build on and 06' and later are full bearing rather than bushings.

You may be somewhat local to me and I may have something I can build for you that fits in your budget. PM me if you want to discuss.

Used for sure. Lota folks dumping quality 26' FS bikes for dirt cheap to get into a 29 these days. Be patient and picky and you can get a solid bike on CL.

Nah, not mine. Anyway, I went ahead and bought a '97 Cannondale after checking out Diamondback and GT models and finding them heavy and blah.

Good call, on the Cannondale. Those old school frames were handmade works of art and highly-upgradeable, simply because they were so damn light.
