Was looking at shoes online at DZR.com the other day and started thinking wishfully about summer time, where a more commuter-style SPD shoe might come in handy, but there isn't anywhere near Santa Fe where I would be able to try a pair on.

I'm less concerned with how comfortable they are OFF the bike, frankly, because when I've had to I've spent an 8 hour work day in my performance-built bike shoes. What I'm looking for is personal experience with them ON the bike. How stiff are the soles? Does wind cut through them like butter like it does my chinese-made converse? How long did you get out of a pair commuting heavily? Was the tread decent enough that you could realistically get off the bike on a trail and walk on loose gravel without slipping? Thanks.
