    2003 Tomac 98 Special

I am looking at getting into Mountain biking as I started riding for triathlons last year and absolutely loved riding. Guy here has a 98 Tomac Special for $300, bike is stock. Should I go after this upper end used bike or go after new but lower end bike (say a Trek 4300) for a beginning MTN bike?

    All comments appreciated!

Those are good bikes, as long as everything is in good condition (ie Shock and Fork working with no leaks, drivetrain not worn out, no other obvious damage) then $300 is a good deal.

I bought a 98 Special 8 years ago and still going strong. I've added carbon bars and post and mine weigh under 27lbs. I also have an Ibis SL but if you can believe, I still ride the Tomac half the time. I think $300 is a great deal for that bike.

Sounds like a good deal. However, I remember those bikes had a "point" at the chainstay and seatstay junction where a rider's ankles could hit on each revolution of the cranks.
