possible to convert mullet to more of an xc ride?

I have an 05 mullet sitting in my garage that I dont really use much anymore. I would like to make it more xc oriented, is this even possible?? I was thinking about getting some smaller tires (2.1) and maybe new stem/handlebar. Should I even bother? I am planning to get an xc bike in the spring, but want to use my mullet when the weather is bad, preferably as an xc ride. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

tires , longer stem and longer seatpost and I think it will be fine. We have had 2 of them and they are nice all around bikes.
