Trek 6000, Fuji Taho Comp 29er, or custom Soma

Hi all, I'm new to the forums, been reading a lot but this is my first post.

I'm in the market for a new CC MTB to replace my Iron Horse Warrior, which is too small and just not satisfying me anymore. I've got it narrowed down to about 3 but I have a few hangups.

The three bikes I've been looking at are a Trek 6000, a Fuji Tahoe Comp 29er and getting a custom built Soma Groove or Juice 29er.

I have a pretty low budget, about $800 so spare me the "You can't get anything good for that price" negative posts please.

So pretty much the two questions are Steel or Aluminum, and 26" or 29er? The guys at my LBS have pretty much been saying that 29ers are taking over and for good reason too. Also if i got the Soma route I realize I won't get the same quality of components because building a bike is naturally more expensive than off the shelf.

I ride mainly on single track trails, oh, and I'm 6'3'' and 170 lbs.

Prices I've been quoted are $680 for the trek, $900 for the Fuji and TBA for the Somas.

the Trek 6000 is a decent hard tail, but my experience with it, the brakes suck and so do the bontrager tires (jones xc 2.1) so it leaves a lot to be desired. I have to be real reserved with my speed in the woods, due to lack of stopping power. the front brake is the only one that has any power, and the rear is just a noise maker. Also any bit of rain here in the piney woods of east texas, these tires have zero grip on tree roots. both problems are easily fixed with the brakes being a bit more of a hassle.

no input on the other bikes.
