    Headtube Not Square, Headset is Binding

    I have a brand new aluminum tapered headtube frame and the upper face and bore are not square with the bottom. Is it scrap since the bore is not aligned?

    Thanks

    Hey;

    Take it to your LBS and have it reamed/faced. That should fix it.

    That's what I was hoping, but if it is re-reamed won't the bore no lodger be cylindrical?

    Most likely it is just the facing that is necessary.

    I assumed that since the 110 is seated nice and square that the bore was off too. I guess then a search is on for someone with a 44mm reamer/facer tool. I am pretty sure no LBS of mine will have the setup...

    Thanks Guys!

    Face is more important

    The bore can be off a little, but as long as the faces are square, it won't matter.

    If you're in SLC, stop by and I can do it for you in like 10 seconds.

    Go to the dealer of the brand to ensure a warrenty replacement if it can't be fixed.

    Chinese QC, eh?

    If it's bad enough to bind noticeably, that's pretty bad. The cutters will only cut if there is anything out of whack. If something is square, it won't be cut. Like Walt said, it might only hit a face leaving the cup land alone. If it has been reamed before, and the cutter is installed and lots of cutting starts happening, to both faces and lands, the frame is really buggered and you'd likely have to either get a replacement frame or set the cup(s) in with some sort of compound.

    But who knows how accurate the material was in the first place? If there are no signs it has ever been reamed, you might get away with it. The cutters and what they do will tell you....

    I damaged a Cane Creek 40 ZS44 top cup/bearing because I did not ream the headtube first. Could not adjust the headset so it was either loose or was binding.

    Reamed/faced the top and installed a different brand top and all was well.

    The shirt of the CC was pretty thin and the bearing seat distorted even though it pressed in "square".

    The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common
