    Beralcast for MTB frames

    So I heard about this stuff that is used in the aerospace industry, and I thought it could also make quite a nice frame for mountain bikes. Has anyone ever heard of beralcast being used as a frame or what are your thoughts? I have no idea how much it would cost.

    Mechanical Properties:

    Density=0.078 lb/in^3, about 80% of aluminum
    Modulus of Elasticity=29.3 Msi, about as stiff as steel
    Yield strength=47.2 ksi @ RT, 18% more than AL6061

    Beryllium has been used for bike frames before, yes. It's incredibly expensive and also makes toxic dust, so it never caught on.

    I don't see the appeal of Beryllium....

    If you want ultimate performance go with carbon.

    For art, craft, and hand building try to work with something that is not toxic.

    Saving 51g on outdated square taper is a joke; crazy light carbon cranks with more modern proper spindle design will be much lighter....
