    Fatbike race.

I've been waiting all week for this post - answers the question you can ride the Kettle Moraines in winter. Never been there. We have a night winter MTB race over here on the east side a week before this one, so I'm glad there's no conflict. Too bad Lake Michigan doesn't freeze over - it would be much faster riding across than the toll road bend

UTABINTARBO, are you biting on this?

Most likely I'll be in for this, is there a racer limit? Would it be OK for me to post this on another forum? I know of two other Michigan racers that may bite on this, provided one got his Mukluk.

    Great idea!

I'll be racing in the StrathPuffer 24 hour instead...

Thanks! Is that the infamous "Kettle Moraine Werewolf" in the flier? I take it losers will be eaten

Also - not sure if they will show, but I know of a couple people who have old school fatbikes with Large Marge rims with Nokian Gazza 3.0's in the rear because the frame will not fit and Endo or Larry, but sport a GFS rim or LM with an Endo up front. Would they be denied?

Waiting impatiently for the dumping SE Michigan will get this weekend

It's what you get when you cross a muppet with the abominable snowman. We'll have to have some sort of special DFL prize...

If They're running large marges...that'd be fine with me, but the whole idea, that riders don't need to have their own bike......seems to be getting lost in the shuffle. One bike + 3 or 4 riders = a team. Or any combination of bikes and riders.....

It's snowing right now, here on the west side,

Agreed. With only four snow bike events in the midwest over the winter (really three if you count ones that mere mortals could reasonably participate in) its more than a little unfortunate that two of them are on the same weekend.

Also, the "fatbike only" thing seems a little snobby. But still, might work out well for me and my old-fasioned SnowCat rims if you guys pack the trails downs with your fat-bikes so I could head out there for a night ride the following week.

    Friendo,

You don't need a bike at all to race the fattrack.....our format seems to be too confusing for some. Maybe people just like to complain.

It's kind of ironic that we specifically designed a race format that would allow everyone to have fun and give snow biking a whirl and Frank thinks it sounds snobby.

Now somebody will probably post that we're socialists for promoting an event that encourages bike sharing.

Please read the verbiage under the sparkly race flyer.......or if you can't read...have someone read it for you. After that....if you have specific questions about the unique race format....the rider draft.....the process that will take place to form teams....post them.

Be sure to read about the entry fee.......it's F'ing - FREE!

I admit I was pretty sleepy and grumpy last night, and between the date conflict and the fatbike requirement I didn't read much further.

Sounds like a unique format, I'd be interested in seeing how it turns out.

Be sure to encourage people to bring plenty of warm-dry clothes to change into after their laps, nothing worse than going all-out and then having to stand around in the cold while you're all sweaty. How long are the laps going to be? Seems like shorter (red loop?) would be better.

There'll be a long list of things to bring...for sure.

We want to have fairly short laps, so the Brown Loop (formerly red) will definitely be in play on race day.

The really big question will be weather conditions......will it be minus 20, or 50 degrees......I'm hoping for a fresh few inches of snow and 'temps' somewhere in the 20's

    Lodging

I've arranged for a discount rate at the newly constructed Hampton Inn in Elkhorn, WI for those of you that are coming in from out of town. It's about a ten minute drive from the trailhead and close to a couple restaurants.

The room rate is $79 a night.

Just ask for the Snow-Bike rate when you make your reservation.

We have a Winter Racing Series (3 events, one of which is a small festival) over here in Minnesota. I think we still qualify as midwest, right? It's called The Cold Bear Challenge, and this is the 5th consecutive year of the series. I have only advertised locally for our events on the MORC forums, but I'll try to be more active in the MTBR forums to let the rest of you crazy f-r's in our secret fun. Nearly 8 miles of wooded, tight, twisty, steep up and down, singletrack... each lap. Cash payout for the Fatbike class at the festival.

Watch for a new thread to begin soon....

Hey, I have nothing against doing two completely different events in the same winter...just not on consecutive days. Nothing against the organizers of this ride either, but I was already signed up for Triple D and was sending my regrets.

Speaking of which, Sr. Gomez, there seems to be a dearth of events in the second half of February and early March, should avoiding scheduling conflicts ever take precedence over other planning considerations. Too bad that can be such a crappy time of year to ride in our neck of the woods...

I think it's all good.....the more events the merrier. It's really hard to schedule things this time of year, because of (the holidays) plus weather considerations. January and February are basically the best bet for good winter conditions. March is completely out due to spring thaw, plus that's when trailbuilding days kick into gear for Kettle. The Cold Bear Challenge is in February. I think it's ~ and hour NW of MPLS. It used to be called Pugfest.....If you need something to shoot for in February.

Good luck at the Triple D, Mauricio!

Besides I'd like to think that a really f'ng hard race like the triple D is going to draw a much different crowd than a 3 hour race where you will be sharing the work with at least 2 other people while consuming free beers.

Right, and plus the Madison Swap is the first Saturday after the New Year's weekend, and that's usually a pretty good one to catch.

Seems like the guy who organizes the Triple D has difficulty with scheduling too, especially since he lives in Florida. (But not with weather. I think he actually likes bad weather for that event. )

I'd happily agree that the two events wouldn't seem on the face of it to be in competition. But having done a couple of the former, I certainly wouldn't mind a dose of the latter. I'm not proud.

Just cannot do on the same weekend...the mind says yes, but the wife, the schedule and even my own body, say NO!

    Ray's

As an added bonus Ray's Milwaukee opens today. Never been to the other one, but I know quite a few people that drive out there a long way to ride it. One could make a whole weekend of bike activities around this race.

    Riders Wanted

I plan on going to this event, but need riders. Is anybody interested in riding a 16 Pug?

Also to the planning committee....maybe there should be a hot tub?...just saying that wearing a bikini in the cold under biking clothes while having a beer sweat may be more appealing if there were a hot tub.

I don't think you'll have any problem filling any empty roster positions pre or during the race day draft.

Believe me....I've thought about a hot tub or mobile, wood fired, sauna.....but this year's budget is already shot.

We're buying a cord of wood and we encourage everyone (that has one) to bring ez-ups with sides.....to give us some shelter from the wind......if it's indeed, windy on race day. We'll also have a torpedo heater blasting out some bikini weather - albeit minuscule, but we can take turns...just like the riding.

It's a brand new year, so this is what Wisconsin is gonna need from everyone that comes to the race,

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gomez_lakeraven/5331018309/" title="WI-DNR Rates by ~gomez~, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5281/5331018309_3972d02cb0.jpg" width="399" height="500" alt="WI-DNR Rates" /></a>

There'll be forms and a self pay drop at the race venue to handle this.

On a positive note.....you may want to bring a few extra dollars to snag one of these.

    <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gomez_lakeraven/5331695282/" title="Sno-Bike T's by ~gomez~, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5045/5331695282_2f87ceea56.jpg" width="500" height="403" alt="Sno-Bike T's" /></a>

$12 cash - Limited qty's and sizes available on race day.

    Trail Head Location

Is the trailhead on Highway H between Bluff and 12/LaGrange? I did a Google Map then street surfed and tried looking at what appears to be an unmarked trailhead. Some of their photos are pretty old. The park website matches your descriptions in this thread better. Reason I ask is there appears to be a private residence that looked like an entrance.

4 inches of fresh light snow fell on Tuesday and there is a 1-3 inch prediction for Friday night into and including race time!

    SCHEDULE

9:00 – 11:00 – Pre-Ride the course – Brown Loop (used to be the Red Loop)

    11:00 – Noon – Registration

Noon – Captain’s Draft Derby (to determine who picks first)

12:15 – Team Rider Draft (Team Captains pick riders like in 5th grade gym class)
The rules of this draft will have to be very flexible. We’ll need everyone’s cooperation during this phase of the process of getting the Captain/Rider ratio, basically even.

*In my nightmare scenario, we don’t have enough fatbikes to accommodate every rider. That is why I want every race participant to bring a mountain bike! We’ll do everything we can to get you on a fatbike team, but if we can’t……We’ll form a separate division for regular mountain bikes.

1:00 – Race Starts – LeMans Start thru the Stunt Loop. Racers will have to carry their front tire while they run to their bikes.

4:00 – Finish – The last Racer must cross the finish line at or before 4:00 PM - In the case that there is a tie for the total number of laps…..the tie breaker will be a Head to Head one lap Sudden Death Playoff…..or indian leg wrestling, if we’re tired of riding.

    WHAT TO BRING

Bike – Sno-Bike (if you have one) If you don’t have a sno-bike, bring your regular mountain bike, just in case*

Sno-Bikes should all have flat pedals installed. Ben’s Cyclery will have a limited supply of cheap flats that you can buy at the race venue. Talk to Jim at Ben’s if you want him to bring you out something special.

EZ-Ups with Sides – (If you have One) Let’s make a circle of EZ-Ups surrounding the fire-pit. We’ll have a couple of Torpedo heaters blasting too.

Food and Water – We can fire up the grill if people want to BBQ

Garbage Bags – Please pack out everything that you pack in.

    CLOTHING

Every sort of warm Cozy Winter Clothing you can find. This is not the time to skimp on what you bring out to the venue. Bring Chemical hand and foot warmers. Bring that ridiculous Christmas sweater that your Aunt Moe gave you ten years ago. Bring stuff you can ride in and stuff you can stand around and sip beer in. Bring out the big guns of your winter clothing arsenal.

Clothing Mathematics – 5-6 hours in the great out of doors – 3 hour race – 10 minute laps with a 4 person team = riding 10 minutes + resting 30 minutes, divided by 3 hours = the number of dry base layers needed. Correct answer…..one **** ton of winter clothing.

Bring Extra Socks, Hats, Mittens….bring it all!

    SCORING

We….or rather you will all be manually marking your score on large posters that will be displayed in the transition area. Make sure you mark every lap (or it won’t count)

    TRAIL & PARKING PASS

Everyone will need to purchase (either a daily or annual) trail and parking pass from the DNR-WI. There is a self pay station as you enter the Muir Parking Area. Details on fees can be found at http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/Org/land/parks/fees/

    PLEASE REMEMBER

The trails will be open to riding and hiking during the race. Be courteous to all other trail users and be safe at all times. Give plenty of warning to folks before you pass. The purpose of this event is to have fun…..so please have FUN! We will present awards to the team that has the most fun, as well as the team that rides the most laps. Hell….we’re going to award a sweet prize for DFL too!

In the spirit of fun, I ask that we all try to make the proverbial (herding of cats) [my job on race day] as easy as possible. We’re going for an atmosphere of organized chaos…..so a little ‘go with the flow’ would go a long way, to make this fun for everyone.

Lakefront brewing will have a keg of their delicious beer for us to enjoy. Please drink responsibly.

And (last but not least) If you like seeing events like this…..bring a few dollars to throw into the hat to cover our costs in running the event.

    Thanks – See you Saturday!

Hopefully I can avoid being the first on one the team to have to do this - because it's not possible for me. I have a 100MM hub on my Wildfire and cannot remove the front wheel without deflating the tire.

I guess you'll have to do the run.... carrying the whole bike then - and I mean carry...no rolling

No worries, I'm pretty easy going. Speaking of front tires, and if you allow regular MTB's, I've got an extra front-specific 2.5 DH tire someone with a normal 26" bike can use if they wish. Leftover from a previous "Sneauxbike" I once had.

Wondering what kind of beer that Lakefront Brewery is bringing to the party....doh!, I mean race.

    Wonder no more...

    http://www.lakefrontbrewery.com/

Trail conditions are good right now. I made first (tire) tracks out at the muir trails yesterday afternoon. The trail runners and dog walkers had first dibs on the 2.5" of snow that fell on Tuesday. There's ice under the nice layer of snow in spots out there, although I had no problem riding at a good pace with my Larry-F, Endo-R tire combo. Hitting the trail at race pace might be a different story, but we'll just have to let the cameras roll on Saturday, to find that out.

Snow forecast is calling for an additional 1-3" of fresh snow before race time. It's supposed to snow right up until the start of the race on Saturday.

OK, I'm here. Weatherman's saying 2 more inches of snow tonight I was surprised to find a bit less than where I live, but it's good enough. The lack of wind makes it nice. Looking forward to this.

5th Annual Cold Bear Challenge Winter Racing Series at Hillside!!!
2011 Winter Races at Hillside Park in Elk River!!!

The Cold Bear Challenge winter racing series is back for the 5th consecutive year! If you raced with us sometime in the last few years, you know we have a killer time up there. A few weeks from now, we will be racing on the snow up at Hillside Park in Elk River! If you want to get in on the fun, here's your chance. We will again be grooming the trail as much as necessary, so it should be sweet. This trail sees regular usage all winter long, so you owe it to yourself to find out why. There's more Fatbikes out there than ever before. Let's get them all together and see which one works best!

    Here's the dilly-o

    2011 Dates, all on Sundays:
    January 9th
    January 30th
    February 20th = FatBikeFest!!!

    The course is cross-country/wooded singletrack
It will use the entire 7+ mile loop for each lap
We will also use the entire Beginner Loop for the prologue this year (NEW!)
    10:30am Registration opens
    12:00pm Race start (Noon!)
$10 Entry fee ($15 for FatBikeFest - FREE hats Yo!)
Classes are: Advanced Men, Recreational Men, Open Women, and the "King of the Hill" Pugsley's
Advanced and Pugs do 2 laps, all others are one lap. (The Women can vote for more...)
Prizes for top three in each class, except the Pug's
    Pug class is winner-take-all
    Random drawing for swag
There will be a big fire to warm up around
Studded tires will not be needed unless it gets icy
We will be using the back lot for registration and staging, NOT the front lot

I put together some of the best vids I took that give everyone an idea of what one lap was like:

We met in the parking lot, It was nice to meet you. I was the guy with the Mukluk with BarMitts.

Nice riding from 5:07 to 6:00, that was a tricky little technical section to clean, well done.

    You're welcome!

Another prog rock fan! "I miss my Mellotron" that's priceless! I've played bass since I was sixteen, bought a PRS guitar about nine years ago, then discovered the NS Stick by Stick Enterprises/Ned Steinberger. In 2007 I added a 12 String Chapman Stick. Ever since I got involved with the Stick I've met many fantastic musicians and attended seminars from Melbourne Australia to Interlochen, Mi. I did get to see Tony Levin with the California Guitar Trio a couple years ago, where a friend of mine opened for them in Ann Arbor. Outside of doing weekly group lessons on the guitar I've been doing more with Pro Tools over the computer.

At interlochen a couple years ago I ate lunch with Lawrence Juber who was one of the intstructors (he played guitar for Paul McCartney & Wings). He talked about some of the work he was doing making music for video gamers. After hearing that and getting one of those Go-Pro helmet cams, I find it pretty cool making background music for these bike videos. I write down where the scene changes occur, then start laying down tracks in Pro Tools. What's nice about videos is the song is NOT the main focus, and you can break a few rules writing music. What's made a huge difference for me is the EZ Drummer program. I no longer spend weeks writing drum parts.

Pretty soon I'll need to replace my aging MIDI keyboard, a cheapo USB 1.0 thing that has one key that keeps sticking. I keep looking in the direction of Korg synths. In the Stick community there's a few mountain bikers I've shared these vids with. I was surprised also at last year's Guitar Workshop at Interlochen that guitarist Phil Keaggy also likes mountain biking. Unfortunately he ran out of time, he wanted to see my Fatbike I had with me in the car.

Posts like this make me do a double-take, I have to remind myself which forum I'm in, quite a few mountainbiking musicians out there

I have quite a few music videos at my Youtube channel: MichiganNS

I was happy when I cleaned that section you mentioned, found that speed was not a friend there earlier. Really enjoyed coming out there, one of the best winter races I've done. Got another coming uo this weekend after the 18" of snow we are supposed to get, should be interesting.

Well if your a Sconnie the coordinators have a limited calendar..... We have the New Years weekend circled for Da Badgers. Maybe the weekend after this year.
Then there are all the playoff dates and the Super Bowl for Da Packers. We are planning on that - again
I would bring up the Badger hockey run as well but that is not looking so good right now.

Just kidding, I have no idea how this is all coming together on the same weekend. But I plan to be at this event

We have many scheduling head aches right now. The CX National Championships have pushed the cronometro madison bike swap onto the 14th as well. So the date for our event is now up in the air again. We'll announce the new date on FAT-BIKE.COM | A Resource for Fans of FatBikes!.
