Why can't I use any crankset that is for a ST or ISIS 100 mmbb?

Wondering why I must use an FSA Alpha Crankset along with a 100mm bb on a Pugsley?

Why can't I buy a 100mm ISIS bottom bracket and than any old ISIS crankset??

Or why can't I buy a 100mm square taper bottom bracket and then any old square taper crank??

    Thanks for any info!

Last time I checked, there was only two 100mm ISIS BB available
(FSA and Truvativ), and one square (Phil, OK exactly two Phil, one
    Stainless, one Titanium)

and btw I have a FSA ISIS BB and older RF NorthShore DH cranks
    and it works just fine

Generally the FSA BB lasts better than the Truvativ it would seem from peoples experience here.

There is also the Raceface ISIS BB which can still be found. I've got one of these on my Pug.

    Thanks for the info!

I have two older square taper cranksets siting around, but don't want to drop that coin on a Phil Wood.

Too bad Race Face doesn't make a cheaper crank option to go along with their 100mm BB Outboard BB. I know how to replace the bearings in outboard BB easily with a slide hammer and replacement bearings from Enduro Seals. In fact the replacement ends up better than new, do it all the time with my Shimano Hollowtech!

If there are very nice older cranks, it's maybe worth the money.
There are no other Square and no Octalink on the market:

No, I definitely don't want to put any money into these things. Old and heavy.

May just go in the direction of the FSA Alpha and 100mm FSA Platinum BB. Seems like it might be heavy, but I guess I don't have many other (cheap) options.

Like I said, jsut wish I could rebuild the BB, don't want to have to look for a 100mm ISIS bottom bracket everytime one fails. I have to do that for my m960 XTR Chainring which is a unique size and now I have to find custom rings to fit the BCD, it's a PITA.

    To get rolling with a fat square taper BB on the cheap try;
Extra Wide Bottom Bracket Axle - Cycles U.S. LLC/Choppers U.S.

Loose ball bottom brackets may have gone out of style but they work fine if you take care of them.
