    Where did I go wrong..Crank, chain,shifter,chainrings

After nearly two years planning and saving i finally took all my parts for my 907( 170mm), to the LBS for assembly.
My planned triple setup seems to only be a double.
    I have the following
Raceface Chester crank ( supposedly able to be single, double or triple )
    Raceface turbine chainrings ( 24/32/42)
    XT shifters SL - M780 ( 2x or 3x )
    XT chain CN- HG94

On picking up the bike i was told that the cranks can only be set up double and the shifters should really only be used for a double setup. I also had to purchase an extra chain as one chain is not long enough.
Im left with a double 32/42 and 11/36 cassette.
Does this sound right? The chester is advertised as single/double or triple and the shifters say 2x or 3x. Should I have ordered two chains?
I don't want to make the same mistakes when I get to my wife's bike.
    Where did I go wrong!!!

Just looked at a picture of your chester cranks and it looks like it would accept 3 rings to my simple eyes? Sounds like they need longer chainring bolts... 42 ring on the outside of the crank arms, 32 on the same bolt but inside and then the 24 ring on the smaller bolt holes on the inside??

As for chain length, I used a KMC chain on my 9:zero:7 with 11-34 & 24/36 and I had 2 or 3 spare links.... with your 42 front and 36 rear it would be tight!!

Shifters, I have these on my Cannondale and there is a screw on the LHS shifter that allows you to change between 2 & 3 front chainrings!!!

I would suggest swapping to 24/36 on the front if you cant fit the 3rd ring to the front chainset but with the components you have it should all work!!

And just FYI, I get 23mph on 36 - 11 on the flat, a suggestion might be to think about a bash guard rather than 42 on the front??

Really, Man... I don't think you'll need a big ring on a fatty.

I need the small ring.......really want to use a24t or even 22t as very dodgy knee and very difficult climbs in norway mountains. LBS say i cannot have an inner ring on these cranks. However the cranks are advertised as single/double or triple. Was hoping someone had set these up triple. I don't want to buy more chainrings.

The LBS is mistaken as the turbine rings are pinned/ramped for such a setup to be a dbl or triple. What is their reasoning for the crank not accepting an inner ring??

Check out the Surly OD Crankset. It JUST became available.
It'll give you an inner and a middle and a good chainline.

Might have something to do with your tire/rim combo. What are you running?

Judging by the information that has been posted here, I'd say that his shop doesn't know WTF they are talking about.

What front derailleur are you running? Might be possible that something is off with your front derailleur/shifter setup (triple FD with double shifter setting or the other way around).

    Thanks everyone.
    The front derailleur is XT FD- M780-E. 3x / 10 speed with 2x , 3x change screw.
Running Husker Du on Large Marge Lite. ( my research suggests this will clear )
Rear derailleur SLX Shadow plus RD- M675 10 speed
    Cassette CS- M771- 10speed

I was told the granny WILL NOT go on these cranks. The guys said I had probably purchased t a double crank. An earlier email from Raceface said these chainrings will work with the Chester but inner bolts are never included in the kit. I thought I would just need about 16mm bolts but not sure about spacers or if spacers come with the RF inner bolt set that I see listed.
You will not be surprised that Im very inexperienced but I really have tried to do a lot of research during the LONG dark winter of Norway.
I want to get the triple working if possible as I don't wish to purchase more chainrings and I think it may go well with a second set of wheels ( 29er ) for summer and light touring with my wife who has a Surly Ogre.
    I really appreciate the feedback.

This may have nothing to do with your problem, but the Race Face Turbine cranks I recently bought need a granny ring spider to run the inner ring. Without that there will be insufficient space between the middle and granny ring.
