Caution; Merge; Workers Ahead! Surly Pugsley Fork Recall

    Hey all, first post here.

I just bought a '13 Surly Pugsley. Great bike!

I was on the Surly site and saw this: Safety Recall

    (2) 135mm Spaced Disc-Only 17.5mm Offset Forks in red, yellow, and black finishes that were sold both aftermarket (FK3175, FK3181, FK0706) and on complete Pugsely bikes as original equipment (FM3110-14, FM3175-79, BK3110-14, BK3175-79). The 135mm forks are stamped with date code 2012 06 19.
Remedy: Consumers should stop using forks immediately and contact an authorized Surly dealer to arrange for replacement or refund.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission will monitor the effectiveness of this recall. *
I called them regarding the fork on my '13 Pugsley and was told that 135mm fork on the Pugsley is only affected if it has the 2012 06 19 date stamped on it. Other dates should mean the fork is ok. He said I should pull my fork to confirm the date is not 2012 06 19 and if it isn't, I'm good to go.

Edit: Forgot to mention; The guy I spoke to at Surly said most of these forks were sold before August 2012.

Doh! I've been lurking for a little while and totally missed those threads. Should have used the search function.

Reading the Titles of threads on the first page is pretty foolproof though.

what is the deal with the search function?
does it just bring up a few threads that are related to the search, and mostly just random threads?

I recommend using Google for searches and adding mtbr at the end of your keywords. It's faster and typically more useful.

that sounds like a great Idea. I have found more useful threads from mtbr on google than with the search function on mtbr just by accident. It should work even better if I was to use it on purpose, and add the mtbr at the end.

and if it doesn't find them on MTBR at least it shows other results from elsewhere

may not have helped the OP any

The MTBR search works for me and I can see at least 4 fork recall related threads in the first page of search results.

In your particular search, you did happen to get at least 4 relevant threads out of the first 25 that come up, but even then, why are those 4 not at the top. shouldn't the threads with all 3 search terms in the title come up first.
In my experience, the search tool has not been very helpful. I also see a Google custom search bar now at the top right of the page. I will have to try that one.
Edit/update: I tried the google one at the top right hand corner, and it does work a lot better:

If you go to the advanced search you can ask that it search titles only or the whole body of posts. You can also give it instructions on how you want the search results ordered.

I just used the "dumb" fast search box for that example because I find scanning down the page of results faster than bothering to get fancy with my search criteria.

However, the advanced search options are there if you care to use them.
