    Pugsley w/ Alfine 8 Running out of top end gears

    Basically it seems the Crossfit is working and the legs are getting stronger.

    Currently running 33x22 on an Alfine 8.

    Now that summer is here I find I spend all my time in 7 or 8 and only sometimes down to 4 or 5.
    I have a dedicated 29er trail bike for the big climbs, thinking that stomping on gears 7 and 8 may not be good. When I replace the front cog, what gears should I be targeting to do my stand up pedalling in?

    I have 18,19,20 and 21T rear cogs also, but they make my chain longer.
    Simple answer is bump it up to 34x22 and then 34x21 if that isn't enough. But am I supposed to be pedaling in 5 or 6 most of the time vs 7 or 8?

    I have run 32x22 before. Dang, keep it up dude, you're in good shape.

    I don't like using larger chainrings unless absolutely necessary. Have you considered a chain half-link and using one of your existing rear cogs so that you potentially won't have to deal with a much longer chain?

    Might as well build a SS rear wheel, your Alfine 8 is a boat anchor. Losing 307% range for over 1kg off your rear wheel is a pretty sweet trade. If you put a smaller cog on the rear can't you just slide the wheel further back in the dropouts to take up the slack?

    I already have gone back in the rear slider, this would be my hesitation.
    I think the first step is to get wrenching, put a 34T Q-Ring on my 29er so I can steal the normal 34T from that.
    I have a habit of scaring the locals with my need for speed, I really do try to warn people as far in advance as I can... but why do half the people move left? Ok maybe the sight of a fat bike barreling at you at 30+km/h is unnerving but I do try to smile!

    SS can wait till I blow the gears outta the Alfine.
