Pugsley 2x9?
I'm shopping around for a fat bike, and the Pugsley is on my short list. However, I'm not a big fan of the triple ring up front. Has anyone converted it to a 2x9 with a bashguard? I've converted my 29er to a 1x9, but it's SRAM and I'm not sure if it would be the same with Shimano.

When i gathered the parts it was with the intention of using it 1x9 however I added a spider ring but currently bashless so it easily handles 2x9 with marge lites / 4.0 tires.
Some people are like Slinkies, not really good for anything except falling down the stairs.

The first thing I did with my Pugs was to remove the big ring & add the bash guard. Works fine.
There are three kinds of people: those of us that are good at math and those that are not.

Yeah I put an e13 Turbocharger bashguard on mine, was a fine addition
New & pre-owned Subaru sales in eastern PA. PM me!

Have you considered getting the Necromancer Pug instead? Already set up 2 X 9 with bashguard.

Yes, you can do it.
Just remove the big ring, install a bash and adjust your limit screws.
Or spend a little more and replace the middle ring with a 36t one. 22-36 gearing works really well

+ 1 on 22-36 gearing, once I switched to 2X9 with 22-36 it was perfect. BBG bashguards are great too, well made, strong, and well priced !

Yup. After about 6 months I realized I never really used the big ring so off it went. I have yet to miss it.

+ 1 on BBG bash guards. I use them since 2008 with great results. They are light, low profile, protective and cheap

Thanks for the input. Will consider the Necro as well. I have a BBG on my 1x9 setup and love it so I might go that way for the Pugs.
How does the Shimano drivetrain compare to the x7/x9 on the Mukluk?

Hey Nathan, I see you've gotten the fatty itch too. I will pick up my Muk 3 wednesday. Have you checked a Mukluk out yet? I preferred the sram 2x9 drivetrain and feel of the Muk compared to the surly's which really blew my mind since I have ridden only steel bikes for the last twenty+ years. I really wanted to get a Surly but I went for the Salsa instead. World of bikes has a great selection of both brands right now, even had Salsa in IC today for the I am Fat race. Good luck in your search and have fun!

I have ridden two different Mukluks, one in snow, one on dirt. Was totally impressed. I have not ridden a Pugs yet, but I plan to try them all out thoroughly before making a decision.
Hope you enjoy your new fatty!

Thanks!
Good luck with your search and keep us all posted

I'll probably take off the big ring on mine and throw on an MRP Party Crasher. My Specialized is currently a 1x8- the simpler, the better, I say.

I am running a 2x9 with a 22/36 on my new Pugsley and am enjoying the setup so far.
